Following an embarrassing loss last week, Liverpool welcomes Ajax to Anfield on Tuesday night looking to get its Champions League campaign back on track.
The Reds allowed five goals in the heavy defeat in Italy in Matchday 1 to Napoli. However, multiple starters who missed that game should be in the lineup for this one.
Meanwhile, the Dutch champion got off to a great start in the competition, blanking Rangers 4-0 at home.
This campaign has not gone according to plan for Liverpool, but this is the moment to back the home side in a victory.
Liverpool
In the loss last week, Thiago Alcântara, Diogo Jota and Darwin Núñez all were on the bench, with the Spanish midfielder the most important of the trio.
Liverpool was only defeated in two of 24 fixtures in all competitions that Thiago started in 2021-22.
Meanwhile, Joël Matip also will likely be inserted into the defense as the preferred partner with Virgil van Dijk while Ibrahima Konaté is still out injured.
Ajax
Ajax has really hit the ground running to open this campaign, posting a perfect record through the first seven matches in all competitions.
However, there have been a lot of changes to the squad over the summer, with some big names leaving in the transfer window.
If you look at Ajax’s final game in this competition last season, five players who featured in that match are no longer on the team. Plus, the manager also departed this summer.
The two biggest names that the club cashed in on were striker Sébastien Haller (Dortmund) and winger Antony (Manchester United), who played a direct role in over half of the team’s goals in 2021-22.
Betting Analysis & Pick
I’m looking to back Liverpool, but I need better odds than what is being offered on the moneyline. Consequently, my best bet is a Same-Game Parlay, pairing a Reds victory with the total falling under 5.5 goals at -120 odds at BetMGM.
In this competition last season, only two of the English side’s 13 matches ended with at least six goals. Meanwhile, only a pair of Ajax’s eight UCL fixtures went over this same total.
I know Jurgen Klopp’s team has not been good this season, but the return of key players combined with all of the summer departures for the visitors makes this a strong spot to turn this campaign around.
The Pick: Single Game Parlay: Liverpool ML & Total Under 5.5 Goals (-120)
