We only get a handful of meaningful matches in the last round of the EPL and Leeds United vs Tottenham is certainly one of them. Tottenham will fight to secure a spot in the Europa League and Leeds will hope to avoid relegation.
Not only do both teams have something to gain from grabbing three points, they both aren’t competing in any other European competitions, so they’ll put out their best squads to get the job done.
Leeds United Need to Overcome Massive Odds
Leeds can only avoid relegation if they capture three points. Right now they sit in 19th place with Leicester ahead only by goal differential and Everton sitting right outside the relegation zone with two more points. Even if Leeds win against Tottenham, they’ll only secure a spot in the EPL for next season if Leicester don’t win against West Ham and Everton lose to Bournemouth (or tie and Leeds win by 3 goals).
The Peacocks were promoted after finishing first in the Championship in the 2019/2020 season. After an impressive top-10 finish in the top flight in 20/21, they just escaped relegation finishing in 17th last year. Now, Leeds are -3335 to be relegated (implied odds of 97.1%).
Unfortunately for Leeds, they’ll miss key attacker Patrick Bamford, but Rodrigo could make his return from months of being sidelined.
Tottenham Fighting Injury Issues
Tottenham will play to win this match, but they could secure a spot in the Europa League with a tie if Brentford don’t win against Man City and Villa don’t win against Brighton. Villa are just one point ahead of Tottenham and are tied on goal differential.
Spurs are also struggling with some injuries. Midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg along with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will miss this crucial match.
Leeds United vs Tottenham Pick
I’m taking the Spurs draw no bet line. I expect that there will be copious opportunities for both sides, but I think Tottenham nets more in this match with their far superior, star-studded attack.
In every EPL game since early March, Tottenham have scored in 11 of 12 matches. Furthermore, Leeds haven’t kept a clean sheet in 14 matches.
With both teams looking to secure three points, this game could break wide open. If that happens, it will largely come down to which side can capitalize on their chances. With that in mind, I’m betting on Heung-min Son, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski to out-perform the Leeds attack.
Tottenham haven’t won in their previous nine away matches, but Leeds haven’t won in their last eight games. Spurs won their last three matches against Leeds, and I think they’ll keep that streak going and break their unfavorable away streak.
