In a season where the Giants' starting pitching has been decimated by injury, Logan Webb has once again proven to be the reliable force atop the rotation.
Webb is not a strikeout pitcher in the traditional sense. At only 73 punch-outs in 86 1/3 innings, the right-hander sits in the 38th percentile in strikeout rate, per Baseball Savant.
Yet, Webb has cleared this line in 10 of his 14 starts, including each of the last seven. He’s reached that mark on sheer volume, facing at least 23 batters in 11 of his 14 outings.
The Astros are not an easy team to strike out, but they've been a bit more K-prone on the road this season. Over the last 30 days (285 plate appearances), the Astros have registered a 23.5% strikeout percentage against righties on the road, per FanGraphs.
On the season, nine of the 16 righty starters who have faced at least 20 Astros hitters have cleared this line when pitching at home.
With Kyle Tucker on the injured list, and Yainer Diaz banged up as well, the top of the Astros' order has taken a hit. I expect Webb to easily get through six innings today, especially with the Giants needing their ace to pitch deep into this one.
Think of this bet like you would if you’re backing a volume shooter in basketball. It might be a grind, but I have Webb at about 5.2 strikeouts today.
