The Philadelphia 76ers will look to sweep their first-round series with the Brooklyn Nets Saturday afternoon at the Barclay’s Center. But they will have to do it without MVP candidate Joel Embiid. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Embiid will miss at least Game 4 of this series after an MRI revealed a right knee sprain.
Below I break down the matchup and give my betting prediction for 76ers vs Nets Game 4.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers are off to a strong start in this year’s playoffs. They have won all three games of this series and covered the spread in all three games against the Nets. The Nets' highest point total in the three games played was the 101 points they scored in Game 1. Ultimately, the Sixers will not be judged on how they perform against Brooklyn, but there are reasons to be optimistic going into the next series.
Game 4 of the series will present a unique challenge for the Sixers as they will have to win the closeout game without their biggest star, who averaged 33 and 10 during the regular season is averaging 20 and 10 so far in the playoffs. Over the last three seasons, the Sixers are 14-9-1 against the spread as a playoff favorite under head coach Doc Rivers. In road playoff games, the 76ers are 5-3-1 ATS as favorites over that span. Even with no Embiid, and the Nets backs against the wall, the Sixers are still a 2-point road favorite at most sportsbooks.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets have scored the fewest points of any team in this year's playoffs. Their efforts have been valiant this postseason, but this current version of the Nets is a reminder of the failed super team that finally ran its course. The Nets have lost all seven games they have played against the Sixers this season. Three of the seven losses have been by double-digits.
In the series, the Nets are getting outscored by an average score of 106 to 94, while getting out-rebounded 46 to 34 on average. All of these things are a recipe for a short series. Over the last two seasons, the Nets are 0-7 on the moneyline and 1-6 ATS in the postseason. While all of those losses don't fall on this group, the current crop of Nets have struggled at home against top competition since being put together in February. Since the trade deadline, the Nets are 3-6 ATS at Barclays when facing teams .500 or better.
Nets-76ers Pick
Even without Embiid, the Sixers should end the Nets' season tonight at Barclay’s center. I would lay up to -4 with Philadelphia. The Sixers want to end this series to have a rest and health advantage for a potential (and likely) second-round matchup against the Celtics.
Pick: 76ers -2 — Up to -4 |
