Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina meet at S.B. Ballard Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a Sun Belt Conference showdown.

The Monarchs have already racked up more victories than a season ago, owning a 4-4 record overall and a 3-2 Sun Belt mark.

Meanwhile, the Chanticleers are a win away from earning a bowl bid under first-year head coach Tim Beck.

One of these teams has been profitable this year, and I'll keep riding them in this spot.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

There were a lot of questions for Beck to answer after a poor start.

But things have started to turn around for Coastal Carolina.

The Chanticleers have racked up three straight wins, besting Appalachian State, Arkansas State and Marshall to get the season back on track.

One of the keys to the turnaround has been the defense, which ranks third nationally with three defensive touchdowns. The Monarchs also rank fifth nationally and first in the conference with 12 interceptions.

On the offensive side of the ball, Beck will be missing one key playmaker in quarterback Grayson McCall. He'll miss his second straight game after his concussion against Arkansas State, a considerable loss for Coastal Carolina.

Old Dominion Monarchs

After a disappointing season a year ago, Ricky Rahne’s team has made one of the most significant improvements in the country.

Unfortunately, wins may be hard to get with the upcoming schedule.

The Monarchs are fresh off a loss to a nationally ranked, undefeated James Madison squad. Meanwhile, their next four opponents have a combined record of 22-7, and they need two victories to get to a bowl game.

Rahne will need his key players to continue to perform at a high level, which includes linebacker Jason Henderson. After leading the nation in tackles in 2022, he is currently leading the nation again with 117.

Quarterback Grant Wilson has emerged as the offensive leader after throwing for 277 yards and a pair of scores against JMU. After he was benched for his three-interception game against Texas A&M Commerce, he hasn’t thrown a pick in three games.

If he continues improving and complimenting an explosive running game, the Monarchs should push for a bowl bid.

Coastal Carolina vs Old Dominion

Betting Pick & Prediction

Over the last four weeks, I have been riding this Old Dominion cover train, and I can’t jump off now with the team as a home underdog.

So, my best bet is to play the Monarchs on the moneyline at -120 or better.

ODU continues to be disrespected by the betting market. ODU has a 6-1 record against the spread against FBS opponents.

In this matchup, I don't trust Coastal Carolina to piece together consistent drives, especially without McCall.

The one area where you can attack ODU’s defense is through the air. However, the Chanticleers must do so away from home without their star quarterback.

Also, Coastal is much better at defending the pass but ODU does most of its damage on the ground.

I feel the wrong team is favored in this matchup, so I'll back the Monarchs to secure another close win.
