North Carolina Tar Heels 2024 Season Preview

The UNC Tar Heels are looking to build off a pair of solid seasons with the program’s first bowl victory since 2019. North Carolina went 8-5 last season with its fifth consecutive bowl appearance.

Mack Brown’s Tar Heels will have to fill a massive void with star quarterback Drake Maye off to the NFL. Dynamic receiver Tez Walker is also in the pros now.

The quarterback competition will likely come down to Conner Harrell and Texas A&M transfer Max Johnson. Harrell started for the Tar Heels in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl due to Maye opting out.

The strongpoint of North Carolina’s offense will be the ground game. Running back Omarion Hampton is coming off being a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. Hampton racked up 1,504 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

It’ll be a by-committee approach at wide receiver with Gavin Blackwell, Nate McCollum, and J.J. Jones. Tight ends John Copenhaver and Bryson Nesbit are other capable targets.

North Carolina will have to be much better defensively this season to make a leap in the win column. Ex-Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins supplants Gene Chizik as defensive coordinator.

Jack end Kaimon Rucker is the most potent defender on the Tar Heels. Rucker was a Second-team All-ACC member last season. Beau Atkinson and Desmond Evans will aid with the pass rush as well. Ole Miss transfer Joshua Harris will make a sizable impact at tackle.

Amare Campbell and Power Echols anchor the linebackers. Reliable cornerback Alijah Huzzie is the main shutdown presence in the secondary.

Kicker Noah Burnette was extraordinarily consistent last season, going 19–of-20 in field goals en route to second-team All-ACC honors.

Other than a road contest at Florida State, North Carolina’s schedule isn’t too formidable. Figure on the Tar Heels to extend their bowl eligibility streak with a legit possibility to earn some end of season hardware.

Betting on the North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina Tar Heels Point Spreads

Betting point spreads are wagers based on the expectation that a team will win or lose by a certain number of points. Here’s an example:

  • North Carolina -2.5 (-110)
  • Duke +2.5 ( -110)

In this situation, North Carolina is favored by 2.5 points against Duke. If the Tar Heels win the game by three or more points, a $100 wager on UNC would come with a payout of $90.91. If the Blue Devils won the game outright or lost by two points or less, the same $100 wager would net $110 plus the original $100 for a total of $210.

North Carolina Tar Heels Over/Unders

Over/under, also called point total, is a wager placed on the combined scoring of a single game. Bookmakers come up with a number and you can either bet the over or — you guessed it — the under. Here’s how it works:

Let's say North Carolina plays Virginia and the over/under is set at 65 points. A wager on the over would require the Tar Heels and Cavaliers to score 66 total points or more to win. Betting the under is an expectation that the two teams would score 64 or fewer points. It's also possible for the bet to push, which would happen if the game finished with exactly 65 points scored.

North Carolina Tar Heels Moneylines

Check out this example:

  • North Carolina -160
  • Miami +180

The minus (-) and plus (+) signs distinguish the favorite from the underdog, making North Carolina the favorite in this scenario. Odds can be understood more clearly if you think in terms of $10 or $100 increments. A wager on the Tar Heels odds would mean every $160 bet nets $100. And it's the opposite for underdogs: Here the Miami moneyline was set at +180, meaning a $100 wager would profit $180.

Moneylines are also commonly used when making parlays, which are multiple bets tied into one. Let’s say you bet on North Carolina’s moneyline and a -2.5 point spread, UNC would need to win by three points for that bet to be successful. The risk may be greater, but so is the reward with increased odds. Use our Odds Calculator to calculate any bet amount or conversion.

North Carolina Tar Heels Props

Player props are wagers on a single player, and they're tied to a single stat found in the box score for a game or even the whole season. These are among the most fun to bet on, especially if you're already playing fantasy football and like the player-specific focus it offers. Check out an example below:

  • Conner Harrell 2024 passing yards: 3,100.5
