Sun vs. Sky
By Jim Turvey
Brionna Jones and the Sun head to Chicago on Wednesday evening to take on the Sky. Jones is averaging 13.1 points per game, and there's plenty of reason to believe she'll improve on that figure tonight.
For one, Jones is still having her season averages weighted down by games with limited minutes due to her injury recovery. If we take off the first three games of the season, her ppg jumps up to 15.1. Then, there are also the blowout wins in which head coach Steph White uses Jones even less than the rest of the starting bunch. If we look at only the the single-digit games after those first three games, Jones is averaging 17.5 ppg now.
This game will likely be right on the border of being a double-digit affair, as the Sun are favored by seven at the moment.
If it's a close game, Jones should get plenty of minutes, which should be great news for her over given her per 36 minute numbers this season.
However, there's also the chance she just dominates in a briefer outing. The first time the Sun played the Sky, Jones played 23 minutes but managed to tally 16 points because she went 7-of-8 against this frontcourt. This is now a Sky frontcourt missing their best defensive presence (Elizabeth Williams), and relying heavily on youth. Kamilla Cardoso, in particular, is a strong defender, but youth can often be defeated by guile in the W, and few players have more guile than Jones.
I like looking at the baseline number here, but I'll also be looking at alts, as Jones could reach 15 or 20 if this game stays close.
Pick: Brionna Jones over 12.5 points
Sun vs. Sky
The Sun have only played three road games this season, and they won by more than four just once.
The Sky will be at home with a two-day rest advantage and have a win over the New York Liberty on the road, to their credit.
The Sky have only one double-digit loss this season, remaining competitive in nearly every contest, and it what projects to be a low scoring affair, you have to give them a shot at covering at home, which they did in their 86-82 loss to the Sun in their first meeting on May 25.
