Phoenix is coming off a loss to the Fever where they got down by as much as 31 points by the third quarter. Brittney Griner went down and exited in the second quarter with a right hip injury and is listed as a game time decision for this game. Defense was in scarce supply, and now they face one of the top defenses in the league. The 17-5 Connecticut Sun have already beat the Mercury twice this season, covering in both games.
Before the game tips off on ABC at 1 p.m. ET, let's take a look at our Mercury vs. Sun odds and make a WNBA pick and prediction in our betting preview for Sunday, July 14.
Phoenix Mercury
Phoenix just lost in Indiana on Friday and now head to Mohegan Sun. This high volatility team relies on three point shooting, but the Sun’s perimeter defense ranks 1st in percentage of opponent points from three. Last time vs. the Sun, the Mercury shot just 17.6% from deep, which was a huge improvement on the 3.7% they shot in their first matchup with the Sun this season. Fortunately for the Mercury, the Sun don’t shoot it from deep very often or very well, sitting at second to last in the league in percentage of points from three. All of this points to an under for me, with the biggest liability being the Mercury’s disengaged defense.
Connecticut Sun
The Sun have hit the under in 8 of their last 10 games, and the two overs came on totals set at 151.5 or lower. So far, the Mercury haven’t been able to score more than 72 points against the Sun this season. Connecticut sits at 3rd overall in opponent points per 100 possessions. They are also coming off a three point loss to the top ranked Liberty, and have had three days off leading into this matchup.
Mercury vs. Sun
Betting Pick & Prediction
The Mercury could be without Diana Taurasi, Natasha Cloud, and Brittney Griner who are all listed as questionable, so the Sun should easily be able to cover at home. The Sun defense should also make it tough for the Mercury to score, so I’ll also take the under in this spot.
