We start the latest slate of NFL preseason action with a Jaguars vs. Lions pick on Saturday.
Both Jacksonville and Detroit had very encouraging preseason debuts, with Detroit pulling out a dramatic (for the preseason) win over the Giants.
Now, let's analyze the Jaguars vs. Lions odds and make our bet.
Nate Sudfeld will be QB1 for the Lions for the second straight week. This is going to be Sudfeld’s eighth year in the NFL even though he has never started a regular season game. He really struggled last week against the Giants with a completion percentage near 50% and a 0:2 TD:INT ratio. Rookie Adrian Martinez is the second option after Sudfeld and had very limited action in last week’s game, but he did lead the game-winning touchdown drive.
I would not be surprised to see Martinez more in this game since he had much more potential upside than Sudfeld and looked much better in his limited action last week. I’m not sold on Martinez as an NFL quarterback but I think Sudfeld will give the Jaguars’ defense a far more difficult look.

On Jacksonville’s side, Trevor Lawrence was one of the only non-rookie, starting quarterbacks to play in their first preseason game. Doug Pederson has emphasized the importance of starters playing in these preseason games, an increasingly unpopular opinion across the rest of the league.
I expect Lawrence to go for around two series and then CJ Beathard and rookie QB Nathan Rourke will handle the rest of the game. Rourke has the highlight of the preseason so far with his incredible touchdown pass where he brushed off multiple would-be sackers and threw a bomb for a score. There is no doubt that the quarterback play will be much higher on the Jaguars' side.
Dan Campbell has not had a lot of success in the preseason since taking this Lions job. Last week’s win moved his record to just 2-5 straight up. He is a great motivator but with nothing on the line, it is surely much more difficult to get his guys up. Campbell will be looking to see hard play from young guys, while Pederson wants to see his starters on the field to see how they mesh.

Betting Picks & Predictions
I think the Jaguars win this game, but there is a chance the Lions make a fourth-quarter comeback — just like they did against the Giants — when the third-stringers are in.
For that reason, I think the best way to play this game is to lay the points with the Jaguars in the first half. Trevor Lawrence could be in for the entire first quarter and will be facing Nate Sudfeld on the other side.
