This entire bet starts with Luis Gil. This is Gil’s first start back after being optioned to open the 2026 season. His 2025 numbers were alarming, as his chase rate fell to the first percentile among all starters and his walk rate ballooned to 13%. While his actual ERA sat at 3.32, his xERA was 4.96, a massive gap signaling he was drastically outperforming his underlying numbers. Those command issues don’t fix themselves in a few weeks in the minors, and first starts back from options are historically volatile. What makes the spot even better is who Gil is facing. The Rays are one of the most disciplined lineups in baseball when it comes to not expanding the zone. This is exactly the type of lineup that punishes a pitcher who can’t locate, forcing him into the zone where Tampa’s hitters will be ready. They’re backed by a .304 groundball batting average with runners on base since 2025, best in MLB. On the other side, Steven Matz is an underrated pitcher. He owned one of the best walk rates in baseball last season and has strong expected metrics. Through two starts, he has a 4.09 ERA, but just a 3.47 xERA and 3.33 FIP. These numbers align with how he ended last season. Matz doesn’t need to be dominant, he just needs to keep it close through five innings while Gil potentially unravels. The Rays are coming in off two straight losses, but I think they bounce back here. I’ll gladly fade Gil in his first start back on the road at a wacky Tropicana Field.
