The Jimmy Garoppolo Bowl takes place Sunday as Garoppolo's Raiders face his old team, the 49ers. Garoppolo may not be playing in this game but from a quarterback perspective, this will be one of the better preseason matchups to watch.

Matchup Analysis

The story of almost every preseason game is who will actually be playing, particularly at the quarterback position. As we saw in the Hall of Fame Game between the Jets and Browns (and multiple other games this weekend), Zach Wilson was the better quarterback in the first half, but as both teams moved down the depth chart, the Browns had the advantage with Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

However, this game should actually have pretty high-level quarterback play. On the Raiders side, Brian Hoyer will be getting the start with rookie QB Aidan O’Connell coming in after. Hoyer has been a mainstay as a backup QB over the past decade and should provide steady play. O’Connell is a rookie who I was very high on in the draft and I think he can have some real success in this game, particularly against third-string defenders.

The 49ers are even more loaded at the QB position. Brock Purdy won't be playing in the preseason but apparently, we will be seeing Trey Lance.

After Lance, Sam Darnold will take the reigns of Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Darnold started a handful of games for Carolina last year and actually wasn't the worst starter in the league (shoutout to Zach Wilson). So, as a third-string QB, he is a great option. Even if the QB depth chart gets all the way to Brandon Allen, he's played meaningful games in the NFL.

When it comes to coaching, which is usually the second-biggest factor in preseason games, this is an interesting matchup. Everyone would agree that Shanahan is the superior coach to Josh McDaniels. However, Shanahan has never taken the preseason all that seriously. Conversely, McDaniels and the Raiders had a perfect preseason record last year.

Betting Picks & Predictions

Overall, I think Hoyer will provide more consistent and steady play than Lance and Darnold. I also expect the Raiders to be more aggressive with their young players, whereas the 49ers will be a bit more conservative.

I have a lot of confidence in O’Connell late in the game, and there's a good chance he bests Allen if those two are matched up opposite one another late in the game.

Pick: Raiders +4.5 (Bet to +3)
