Two teams coming off completely different seasons meet up Sunday to kick off their preseasons.
The Kansas City Chiefs embark on their quest to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the second year in a row with quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the charge. The Chiefs added plenty of defensive help via the draft, and we'll likely see most of that young talent make its debut today.
The Saints are a different story. New Orleans is looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Derek Carr will make his Saints debut, while we'll also likely see plenty of rookie QB Jake Haener, who led Fresno State to a Mountain West title and accumulated quite the stat line along the way. The addition of A.T. Perry is heavily anticipated after he had an impressive 2022 campaign with Wake Forest.
Andy Reid has made it known that most of his starters will play in their first preseason game, with the exception of Kadarius Toney and Isiah Pacheco, both of whom have been battling minor injuries so far. However, we shouldn’t expect the starters to play any more than a quarter — it's possible that Mahomes and company are on the field for just a drive or two before their day is over.
Once the guard changes, things don’t look so great for the Chiefs at quarterback. Chad Henne is no longer the backup, so we'll get Blaine Gabbert and Shane Buechele under center.
Saints head coach Dennis Allen has announced that Carr will start at quarterback, which will be his first preseason appearance since 2019. Mahomes is more talented than Carr, but what happens when we move further down the depth chart? The Saints are projected to go with Carr, Jameis Winston and Haener, while the Chiefs are looking at Mahomes, Gabbert and Buechele.

There's no question the Chiefs are going to come out hot with Mahomes leading the charge. The real question is what’s going to happen after the first quarter?

Betting Picks & Predictions
The preseason is the optimal time to take advantage of variance. With personnel changes occurring in the blink of an eye, the score can follow suit. The Saints' QB room is deeper than the Chiefs’, so I expect New Orleans to come out on top.
