The head to head between these teams has been very competitive all season. The Cubs won the regular season series 6-5, while the Brewers lead the postseason matchup 2-0. Tonight is a must win game for the Cubs to stay alive. Jameson Taillon will get the start for Chicago in a huge spot. He’s already proven he can handle pressure, allowing just two hits over four shutout innings against the Padres last week. The expected metrics back that performance up with a 1.14 FIP and 2.68 xFIP. Since Taillon added a “kick” changeup this season, it’s become a deadly weapon. He allowed just two runs over his final 19 innings of the regular season, a strong indicator of his current form. Taillon’s elite command will be crucial against a Brewers team that ranks top five in walk rate. He’s also been much better at home (3.05 ERA) than on the road (4.20 ERA). After throwing just 60 pitches in his last outing, he’ll enter tonight on five days rest. Quinn Priester has been solid for the Brewers, but I remain skeptical. His saving grace is his elite ground ball rate, but beyond that, he’s average and is a regression candidate. Despite his 3.32 ERA, his underlying numbers of a 3.62 xERA, 4.01 FIP, 3.81 xFIP, and 3.96 SIERA tell a different story. He also grades below average in both Stuff+ and Pitching+. Priester has struggled mightily against the Cubs, posting a 6.28 ERA with Chicago hitting .299 against him with a .477 xSLG. This will also be his first career postseason start. Both pitchers will benefit from the Wrigley wind blowing in, but that favors a fly ball pitcher like Taillon more than Priester. I’ll leave the bullpens out of it and take the Cubs to win the first five innings.
