Michigan Wolverines 2024 Season Preview

Expectations are understandably high for the 2024 Michigan Wolverines, the defending national champions who went 15-0 in 2023 and scored playoff wins over Alabama and Washington. The undefeated Wolverines scored their 12th national title and 45th conference championship, including their third straight Big Ten title, in the magical season.

However, the 2024 season will be one of change for the Michigan faithful. Longtime head coach Jim Harbaugh has exited the program to head the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers, and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter departed with him. Wolverines offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, who served as acting head coach during Harbaugh's six-game suspension in 2023, is now the rookie head coach for a new era of Wolverines football.

Moore was a logical choice as Harbaugh's replacement. He will look to provide some stability in what is otherwise a big season of change for this national powerhouse. With a school-record 13 players selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, Michigan had a lot of cleats to fill, including those of quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who went No. 10 overall in the draft. Redshirt sophomore Alex Orji, Jadyn Davis and Indiana transfer Jack Tuttle all look to fill that role.

Running back Donovan Edwards knows this is his year to break out for a Michigan offense that relies heavily on the ground game. With elite RB Blake Corum now in the NFL, Edwards has a lot of production he needs to replace for Michigan to make another postseason run.

However, despite some question marks on the offensive side of the ball, the Wolverines defense should be as stout as ever. New defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale comes from the NFL, where many current Michigan players are likely to play next. That includes Michigan juniors Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham, who provide one of the nation's best 1-2 punches on the defensive line.

However, despite the Wolverines' success last season, oddsmakers aren't completely sold on them in 2024. Heading into the season, most major sportsbooks list Michigan barely in the top 10 (+2500 to +2800) to win a national championship, and the Wolverines have only the fourth-best odds to win a Big Ten title (+600 to +750), behind Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State.

Betting on the Michigan Wolverines

Michigan Point Spread

Michigan spread bettors likely saw a decent return on their investment from the team in 2023. The Wolverines went 9-5-1 against the spread for the year, including the playoffs. A spread bet is a wager on how much a team will win or lose by, so a team can cover the spread without winning the game, or vice versa, depending on the odds. Here’s an example of a Wolverines spread:

• Michigan +7.5 (-110)
• Penn State -7.5 (-110)

If Penn State wins the game, 24-17, Michigan is said to have covered its spread, since the margin of defeat (seven) is less than the spread (7.5). Favored teams (minus odds) need to win by more than the spread to cover. Underdogs like Michigan here (plus odds) need to only lose by less than the spread or win the game outright to cover.

Michigan Over/Unders

With a dominant offense and stingy defense in 2023, the Wolverines were essentially a break-even Over bet for the season. The team hit 53.3% of the overs in 2023 (8-7). Over/unders, or totals, are bets on how many points will be scored in a game.

For example, if you bet over 44.5 for the Wolverines' game against Alabama, you were happy to see the game go to overtime. The total sat at just 40 at the end of regulation, but with Michigan's touchdown in overtime, the Over hit when the game finished with a 27-20 score.

Michigan Moneylines

If you expect the Wolverines to beat rival Michigan State in 2024 but aren’t confident in them to cover the spread, you could bet on the moneyline.

Moneyline wagers are common bets completely based on which team will win the game outright, and therefore, the margin of victory or defeat is irrelevant.

Michigan might be a -190 favorite against the Spartans this year, meaning you would need to bet $19 to get a $10 profit. If the Wolverines were +190 underdogs, then a $10 bet would return $19 in profit. These bets are easiest to understand in $10 or $100 units.

Despite the Wolverines being the reigning champs, the futures market is still a bit bearish on the team. Michigan is expected to finish fourth in the Big Ten, and the Maize and Blue have 25-1 to 30-1 odds (+2500 to +3000) to repeat as national champions. Futures are bets on the entire season and include any wager that doesn’t settle until the season is played out.
