How to Bet on Sports in Ohio

Online sports betting will be live and legal in Ohio soon. Here's a quick four-step guide on what you can expect the betting experience to be like when mobile wagering launches on Jan. 1.

Step 1: Choose a Sportsbook

Several major online sportsbooks went live in Ohio on launch day. One of them is BetMGM, which is offering a deposit match that can be unlocked by entering the BetMGM bonus code ACTION1600. There is a 10x wagering requirement to fulfill if participating in this BetMGM bonus offer.

Eventually, you’ll want multiple sports betting accounts so you can shop for the best lines. You can compare BetMGM with a book like FanDuel, which allows us to use Action Network’s exclusive QuickSlip to instantly place our future bets.

Step 2: Sign Up

Create a new account at BetMGM by following the prompts. You might need to provide proof of identity, like a driver’s license and social security number, to verify you are of legal age and so you can’t create multiple accounts using fake names.

Pro Tip: If you’re in Kentucky or another nearby state and try to sign up in Ohio, use your real information. Don’t use a friend’s address or an old address. It will be perfectly legal to sign up to bet in Ohio while you’re inside state lines, even if you don’t live there.

Step 3: Deposit Money Online, Not in Person

Ohio has made things easy on sports bettors by allowing online sign-ups and registrations. Some states make you sign up in person before betting online.

You can deposit at BetMGM with the following:

  • Credit card
  • Bank account
  • PayPal
  • Wire transfer
  • And more…

Legal sportsbooks make you pay upfront by depositing a certain amount of money (that you choose) which will operate as your bankroll (or available funds to bet). If you’ve previously bet offshore, you’ll be happy to know that it’s easy to use a credit card or bank account to deposit money.

Cashing out is also easy. We’ve seen withdrawals come through in fewer than 24 hours in some instances. If you’ve been betting offshore, that’s a welcome change.

Step 4: Place Your First Bet

Once you’re at BetMGM Sportsbook, either on desktop or through the mobile app, all we have to do to bet is simply click on a line you like, and it will be highlighted.

Once it’s highlighted, the bet will populate your bet slip, where you’ll select how much you want to bet from your available funds that you deposited earlier. That bet slip will be on the right side of your screen on desktop, and in the middle of the bottom menu on your phone.

So get started with sports betting in Ohio with BetMGM's offer at registration. And if you don’t know what any of this means, check out our beginner’s sports betting guide. Also, read our Ohio sports betting market share tracker to learn more about sportsbooks dominating the Buckeye State's betting market!

OH Sports Betting Overview, Timeline and Background

Ohio's dense population, numerous professional and college teams, along with operator-friendly rules should make it one of the top states that offer legal sports betting in the U.S. relatively quickly. The Ohio sports betting bill (HB 29) was signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine on Dec. 22, 2021; it allows dozens of online sportsbooks, betting at casinos, racetracks, super-market kiosks, and professional sports stadiums, restaurants, bars, and convenience stores to operate legalized wagering. The Ohio Casino Control Commission announced that Ohio's first legal bets will occur on Jan. 1, 2023.

Online betting will run through sports teams and physical gaming facilities, who will be able to partner with multiple well-known national brands. They'll pay a 10% tax. Roughly 98% of proceeds will fund education and youth sports, with the remaining 2% allotted for problem gambling assistance.

Ohio is one of the last states in the Midwest to legalize sports betting. Discrepancies over operator count and tax rates prevented the General Assembly from passing anything until 2021, when HB 29 cleared the Senate by a 31-1 margin and the House by a 72-12 mark. A special clause in the Ohio sports betting bill mandates rules to allow first bets no later than Jan. 1, 2023, setting Ohio up for one of the fastest rollouts in U.S. history.

Ohio Sports Betting Rules

Overall, online gambling in Ohio are comparable to most legalized betting states.

All operators will pay a 10% tax, which is average to low compared to other states. Looking ahead, Ohio tax revenue is expected to exceed projections and allow the state to streamline support to the selected initiatives. Ohio's law creates three types of sports betting licenses businesses can apply for:

These are online licenses, available to casinos, racinos and pro sports arenas. The first 21 license holders may partner with up to two "Mobile Management Service Providers" each, i.e. DratKings, FanDuel, etc. The remaining four license holders may partner with just one online provider each, setting Ohio up for a maximum of 46 mobile sportsbooks.

To hold a Type A Ohio online sports betting license, a business must also hold a Type B license, which authorizes brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. Counties larger than 800,000 people can have a maximum of five Type B license holders, counties between 800,000-400,000 may have up to three, and counties with less than 400,000 people are limited to one.

These are thousands of Type C licenses, which are required run sports betting kiosks, available to any establishment with a class-D liquor license. This includes liquor stores, bars, restaurants, convince stores, supermarkets, etc.
