Braves vs Mariners MLB Preview
Last night, Bryce Elder continued his surprising start as he struck out nine in six innings and allowed two runs on three hits.
He made one mistake, a two-run home run to J.P. Crawford in the third inning, which pushed his ERA to 2.02 on the season. Elder did enough to keep his team in the game and give the offense a chance to win it late.
They did when Matt Olson hit the go-ahead home run in the ninth inning to give the Braves a 3-2 victory.
It was his fourth home run in his last five games, and he leads the NL with 13 home runs on the year. Olson began his career in the AL West with the Athletics, and he now has 11 home runs in 47 career games at T-Mobile Park.
Olson has regained his 2023 form when he set the Braves' franchise record with 54 home runs, but the Braves have also regained that form as a team. They led the MLB in wRC+, wOBA, runs scored, batting average and total bases. That is without much from Ronald Acuna Jr., who is currently on the IL.
Olson, Albies, Michael Harris Jr., and Drake Baldwin are among the Braves' hitters who have hit over .300 this season. Meanwhile, Albies is currently tied for the longest hitting streak with Colorado's Mickey Moniak.
Martin Perez is Atlanta's starter. He has a 4.47 xERA and 2.22 ERA, so he is a clear regression candidate. However, he may be the better choice for this outing, considering the Mariners are 27th in wRC+ against left-handed pitchers.
Over the last two seasons, Bryan Woo has been among the best starters in the American League as he is 24-10 with a 2.92 ERA, 3.44 FIP, 129 ERA+ and 299 strikeouts in 308 innings.
He got off to a similar start this season, but his numbers have taken a hit as he has allowed 13 earned runs over his last nine innings. Prior to his last two starts, Woo had allowed six earned runs in just four of his first 75 career starts.
Woo has a 4.05 xERA compared to his 4.61 ERA thus far, though he will need to improve his other metrics for him to bounce back.
After 198 strikeouts last season, Woo has just 29 strikeouts in 41 innings and a 17.5% strikeout rate, well below league average. He is also 12th percentile in hard hit percentage allowed and 31st percentile in barrel rate allowed among qualified pitchers.
Woo will make his first start against the Braves today, and it comes in the rubber match of the series.
The Mariners will also wrap up their homestand tonight, but it has not gone according to plan as they have dropped four of the first games. They have slipped to .500 at home, but they are still just two games back of the Athletics in the AL West.
With just two teams above .500 in the AL, the Mariners are in little danger of playing themselves out of the playoff race at this point.
In fact, they are one of just four teams in the American League with a positive run differential. However, to reach their lofty goals for this season, they will need to be more consistent.
It will help that they got Cal Raleigh back in the lineup last night as the team's designated hitter. While Raliegh is still hitting just .180 on the year, he has five home runs and a .777 OPS over the last two weeks.

Braves vs Mariners MLB Pick to Bet
While the Mariners secured a 5-4 victory on Monday, last night's Braves' victory was a pitchers' duel. That means these teams are 1-1 to the over in this series and 3-2 over the last five meetings.
The Braves are also 4-1 to the over on their current road trip. They are averaging 5.7 runs per game and are not the most forgiving lineup that a struggling pitcher like Woo will want to face right now.
Seattle's offense may lag behind Atlanta's right now, but Perez has its warts.
The Mariners' offense has also been better at home this season. They have the third-most home runs at home this season, as well as a team OPS. That is nearly 100 points higher when playing at home.
With the total at eight today, there is a bit of value to the over. Additionally, if the Braves go off on Woo today, they may clear this number themselves.
Pick: Over 8 (-118)
