Collin Whitchurch's Reds vs Marlins Preview
Edward Cabrera continues to be exactly the pitcher you expect him to be, which is someone with really good stuff, you just have know idea where the ball is going a majority of the time.
It's obviously a small sample size thus far, but Cabrera is actually getting more out-of-zone chases this year than every before. His career rate is 29.9%, but so far this year hitters are swinging at his out-of-zone pitches 35.2% of the time.
That could spell bad news for the Reds. We saw last night what Max Meyer could do against them as he finished with 14 strikeouts, and this is one of the most swing-happy teams in the league.
The Marlins' offense has been surprisingly competent this season compared to what we expected from them at the start of the season. They're exactly league-average entering tonight at a 100 wRC+. Xavier Edwards has been a menace at the top of the lineup, Matt Mervis is showing some surprising pop with six home runs already, and they just got Connor Norby — probably their actual best returning hitter — back from an injury that delayed the start of his season.
The Reds' offense, meanwhile, has actually been worse than Miami's, checking in at a 98 wRC+ through the first month of the season.
Reds vs Marlins Prediction, Betting Analysis
I understand small sample sizes, but I think we're overvaluing the offensive discrepancy here and not factoring in enough that Miami has the starting pitching advantage tonight.
Cabrera has plenty of bouts of wildness, but I rate him as the better starting pitcher tonight against Cincinnati's Nick Martinez.
It's a close enough handicap that I like the underdog here at plus money. I bet them at +105 and that's right around the cutoff point for me, though I'd still consider them so long as there's a plus in front of the number.
