Last night, Travis Bazzana led off the game with a leadoff home run for his fourth of the year. Since moving to the leadoff spot, he is batting over .300 and has seven runs batted in. He finished 3-for-4 yesterday and was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. However, he did not get much support from his teammates, who accounted for four hits combined as the Guardians fell 3-2 in the opener.
The player you typically expect to carry the Guardians' offense is Jose Ramirez. Although his numbers are a bit down from what we usually expect at this point of the season, he still has nine home runs, 16 stolen bases, and 2.4 WAR. Kyle Manzardo has two homers in the last seven days, and Rhys Hoskins has a double and a home run. Ramirez, Manzardo, and Hoskins each have an OPS over 1.000 over the last week.
The Guardians enter play today with a two-game lead over the White Sox in the AL Central. They are not flashy; however, they are following a familiar formula. They are 21st in runs scored and seventh in team ERA.
All-Star candidate Parker Messick took the loss last night, just his second of the year, after allowing three earned runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. He has a 2.40 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 75 innings this season. Tanner Bibee will get the ball tonight, looking for his first win of the year.
He has gotten two runs or fewer of support in eight of his 13 starts. However, he has not exactly helped himself either with a 4.57 ERA, 4.56 xERA, and .258 opposing batting average. He ranks in the 17th percentile or worse in barrel rate, hard hit percentage, and average exit velocity.

It will be interesting to see who becomes a seller at the trade deadline from the American League with nearly everyone still alive for a playoff spot. The Rangers are currently sitting in the third wildcard spot despite being a game below .500. Their pitching has carried them to this point, but they just got some reinforcements back in their lineup.
Last night, Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford both returned and made an impact. Langford led off and went 1-for-4 with a run scored. He came around to score on Seager's two-run home run in the sixth inning, which put the Rangers in front for good.
Langford was a breakout candidate this season, and Seager is a five-time All-Star, but they both have had disappointing seasons to this point. However, they will be counted on to lift a Rangers offense that is 26th in runs scored. Seager, in particular, looks like a strong candidate against Bibee.
Jack Leiter will get the start for the Rangers, and the former top prospect is still battling inconsistencies. However, the highs are very noticeable with two double-digit strikeout outings in his last five starts, including 5 and 2/3 shutout innings against the Royals last time out. He also dominated the Guardians last season with 20 strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed in 14 innings over two starts. It will be impressive if he has another 10-strikeout performance against them, as the Guardians are 24th in strikeout rate against right-handers.

Hitting just .181 this season, Seager has not had a season we are used to from him as a career .285 hitter with 229 home runs. His hit rate reflects that, as he has had two total bases in just 16 of 43 (37%) games this season. Eight of those games came when he homered, including last night in his first game back off the injured list.
Against Bibee, he may be in line for another extra-base hit as he is 3-for-11 with a double against him. Bibee's top three pitches are a four-seam fastball, cutter, and changeup. Seager has done well against all three pitches with seven of his eight home runs off those pitches, with at least a 20% barrel rate and .462 slugging percentage against each pitch as well.
Given that Bibee is already giving up a lot of loud and hard contact this year, Seager's ninth home run is not out of the question, and he is +393 on DraftKings. However, a home run will also give him two total bases as well.
