Rockies vs Brewers Expert MLB Picks
A -258 moneyline! You don't see it very often. But the Brewers have won 63% of their games (64% at home), and they host the Rockies in the first game off of a long homestand, so it's a smash spot for the Brew Crew against Tomoyuki Sugano and a dreadful Colorado bullpen.
Sugano's first season as a Rocky has gone a little better than I expected; I'll give him that! His ERA is under five (4.76), which I wasn't sure he could pull off, throwing half of his games in Coors Field. But some luck has helped him (which is uncommon for a Rockies pitcher), as his SIERA stands at 5.12 and his xFIP is similar at 5.00.
He has a 13% K% and a 6% BB%. I suppose it's good not to walk guys, but it's almost better for the opposing offense when you can't get swings and misses, but you're also throwing a bunch of pitches in the zone.
Hitters have a .392 xwOBA against Sugano this year, and he doesn't discriminate too much split-wise (.365 from righties, .418 from lefties with around a 13% K% against both sides). He's one of the easier pitchers in the league to take out of the yard, and he's given up seven homers in his last five starts to prove that.
The home runs from Sugano get worse on the road (2.09 HR/9 on road, 1.45 at home). So the Brewers are ready to tee off tonight, especially from the left side of the plate.
On the Brewers side is Shane Drohan, who is a sneaky breakout pitcher that you may not have heard much about this year.
The Brewers are probably the best team in the league at getting the most from their starting pitchers. They have the lowest ERA in baseball from their starters, and Drohan has been filling in for Brandon Woodruff and other injured guys very well this year with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.
He's finding a groove lately with 24 strikeouts, four walks, and two homers given up in his last four starts.
Drohan has a very effective fastball (15.9% SwStr%, .205 xwOBA against) and a wipeout slider (20.8% SwStr%, .228 xwOBA against), and then he kicks in four other pitches to make for a very well-rounded arsenal.
I'm not sure where he came from, but the Brewers did their thing with him, and they have another really good starter here as they barrel towards another division crown.

How To Bet My Rockies vs Brewers Pick, Best Bet
But what am I going to do here? Tell you that the Brewers will win at home against one of the worst teams in the league as a -258 favorite? What good is that? We have to go digging a bit deeper.
Some projections from my model in this game:
Drohan: 6 IP, 5 H, 2.5 ER, 5.8 SO, 1.8 BB
I think there's a reason to take his over 5.5 strikeouts (-128). Getting 4-5 feels like the floor here, and he flashed upside to nine last time. I really believe in the fastball and slider he has, so I think he gets to six strikeouts in this matchup.
Sugano: 5.2 IP, 6.3 H, 3.1 ER, 3.4 SO, 2.0 BB
That's a large hits projection. Easily the highest on the slate. DraftKings is giving up over 5.5 for -134; my projection would say that's a winner, too.
We wanted those lefty Brewers for a dinger bet today, as well. So let's check those lines:
- Jake Bauers +335
- Garrett Mitchell +344
- Christian Yelich +565
- Brice Turang +531
Bauers is the most likely to go deep here. I project him for 0.24 homers, 17th-most on the entire 15-game MLB slate today.
Pick: Shane Drohan Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-128), Tomoyuki Sugano Over 5.5 Hits Allowed (-134, DraftKings)
