The Tigers look for the home sweep as future HOF starting pitcher Justin Verlander is set to take the bump, with Kyle Leahy taking the mound for the visiting Cardinals.
In what has been a rather dim start to the season for one of the favorites in the preseason to win the American League, the Tigers are starting to pick up some momentum as they look for the series sweep on Sunday night.
While Verlander is undoubtedly one of the best pitchers to ever do it, the Tigers’ right-hander is 43 years old and coming off a rough season opener, having allowed five earned runs in under four innings of work against the Diamondbacks.

Tigers vs Cardinals Picks, Parlay
Story: Fade Verlander in Sunday Night Baseball situational spot.
I’m concerned about Verlander as he ages. That said, I’m not exactly high on Leahy either.
The Cardinals' starter had a miserable season opener, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over five innings against the Mets.
Runs should be plentiful, so I’m inclined to take a shot with the Cardinals to avoid the sweep in a solid situational spot against the surging Tigers — it’s a good time to sell high on Detroit.
I think Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera matches up extremely well with Verlander. Herrera has two hits in six plate appearances against Verlander, including a two-run homer.
Verlander relies mainly on his four-seam fastball and heavy breaking slider, but Herrera mashes both of those pitches. He’s also very patient and hits the ball extremely hard.
Despite a sluggish start to the season, I think Herrera might provide some much-needed offensive production for the Cardinals in a Sunday Night Baseball victory.
Parlay:
- Cardinals ML
- Ivan Herrera Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
