Angels vs Dodgers MLB Betting Preview

Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview

Tell me if you've heard this before: The Angels have the worst record in the AL.

Jose Soriano was one of the shining stars of the first six weeks of the MLB season. Over his first seven starts, he posted an 0.84 ERA and allowed zero runs in five of his seven starts.

Soriano still had electric stuff and plenty to like about his approach. He sits in the 97-100 range with his four-seamer and sinker, helping him generate a 95th percentile whiff rate — and his bowling ball sinker leads to him ranking in the 87th percentile in GB%.

With close to 80% of Soriano’s outs coming via the strikeout or groundball, he boasts a strong 0.83 HR/9.

The real blemish for Soriano is when he loses the strike zone, he's walking a robust 4.50 batters per nine — the highest mark of his career as a starter. He still owns a strong 2.72 ERA, but the walk issues signal further regression, as his xERA is 4.09 and his FIP is 3.69.

On the other end, the Angels offense has been inconsistent. They rank 15th in MLB with a 97 wRC+ over their last three weeks, but this lineup has too much dead weight.

Mike Trout, Zach Neto and Oswald Peraza are the constants, as each have a wRC+ better than 125 in that span.

Trout also has an absurd 23% walk rate compared to an 18% walk rate in those 19 games. Nobody wants to face the future HOF'er, due to Jo Adell, Jorge Soler and others looking hapless at the dish.

The Dodgers will send Emmet Sheehan to the mound for the series finale. Usually, Sheehan has flipped between the rotation and bullpen the past two years, but injuries to Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow have kept him in a starting role.

Sheehan owns a 4.50 ERA with a more encouraging 3.74 xERA and 4.32 FIP.

Not all is bad for Sheehan. He strikes out 9.62 per nine and walks 2.17 per nine, but his 1.71 HR/9 is an absolute killer.

Plus, he gave up multi-homers in four of his 11 outings. If he can iron out the homer issues, Sheehan has the stuff to be a legitimate rotation option, even when Snell and Glasnow return.

If you want an example of how scary this Dodgers offense is, look at the first inning of Saturday's beatdown of their intra-state foe. They scored nine runs and knocked Jack Kochanowicz out of the game after notching just one out.

Over their last 18 games before Saturday, the Dodgers rank second in MLB with a 122 wRC+. Their approach is grueling for opposing pitchers — striking out 19% of the time and walking 10% of the time (fourth-best in both).

It's only a matter of time until the most talented lineup in baseball fully erupts. Freddie Freeman is getting hot, posting a 185 wRC+ with six homers in his past 19 games. Meanwhile, Kyle Tucker and Mookie Betts each have a wRC+ well below 100.

Are Tucker and Betts over the hill? It could very well be, but I think it's an unfair assessment. Tucker still is an above-league-average hitter (107 wRC+) this year, while Betts missed over a month with an injury.

You won't find a better top-five in the sport than the Dodgers, with Ohtani, Freeman, Tucker, Pages and Betts. That's world-beater stuff from the back-to-back champs.

So, let's break down this line.

The Dodgers are -199 favorites against a bottom-three team in the league. So, if you'd like to take the ML, that's fine with me, but I'm going with the run line.

I know Soriano has a sub-3.00 ERA, but he's been terrible lately, and his walk issues won't fare well against this patient Dodgers lineup.

I expect another blowout in LA.

Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (-102 — Play to -125, FanDuel)
