Giants vs Brewers MLB Betting Preview

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

The Giants finally ended their five-game losing streak with a dominant 19-6 win over the Rockies.

It's been a brutal season in San Francisco. There's no sugarcoating a 23-36 record for a team with a top-10 payroll. Not everything is bad, though.

The ascension of Landen Roupp is one of the stories of the year in the Bay. On the surface, Roupp is a tad unassuming. He stands 6-2 and throws a sinker around 93 mph on average.

The biggest key for Roupp is the deception that comes from his funky delivery. That helps him punch out 10.20 batters per nine.

He's an analytical darling. He strikes out double-digit batters per nine and boasts a 0.45 HR/9. That leads to Roupp backing up his 3.30 ERA with a 3.02 xERA and 2.65 FIP. This isn't some hot couple of months; Roupp is legit and here to stay.

In addition to his elite strikeout rate, Roupp gets groundballs 53% of the time and sits in the 98th percentile in hard-hit rate and 94th in barrel rate. He gets plenty of weakly hit grounders, and that'll be a success more often than not.

The Giants offense has been terrific of late, ranking second in MLB with a 123 wRC+ over their past 16 games.

They've found a more contact-oriented approach in this hot stretch, hitting .270 and striking out 18% of the time. Having Luis Arraez helps those numbers, but Casey Schmitt and Willy Adames each have a wRC+ above 160 in that span with a low strikeout rate.

Milwaukee Brewers Betting Preview

Remember when the Brewers stole Kyle Harrison from the Red Sox for Caleb Durbin and Andruw Monasterio? Well, they also got Shane Drohan, who will draw the start in Game 1 of this series.

Drohan is more than just a throw-in. Once upon a time, he was a legit prospect for Boston before his development stalled, and he was even selected in the Rule 5 draft by the White Sox.

The 27-year-old rookie boasts a 2.63 ERA, with his 2.63 xERA and 2.37 FIP serving as positive indicators for future success. He made just one start this year, and it was his first outing of the year against Boston.

Most of Drohan's outings have come in low-leverage situations. His longest outing was 4 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, but he pitched with a five-run cushion against the Cubs the whole time. His second-longest outing was the same thing but against the Yankees.

How will Drohan pitch with more pressure in a bigger game? That matters here.

This Brewers squad is all about strong pitching and timely hitting.

Of late, their offense has done just enough timely hitting, as it did in two narrow wins over the Astros.

They rank 19th in MLB with a 93 wRC+ since May 15th. The real concern for me here is the Brewers' lack of power. It's not just a trend over their last two weeks, where they have just 12 home runs; they have a league-worst 39 homers this year.

The key for the Brewers is getting runners on and stealing bases. Jackson Chourio snagged four bases in his last 15 games, and Sal Frelick pitched in with three. Once the top of the order gets on base, it puts pressure on the defense, and then the Brewers get rolling.

Giants vs Brewers Pick, Betting Analysis

In general, I like this Brewers team. The bullpen is filthy late in games. Left-hander Aaron Ashby has developed into one of the elite firemen in MLB, while Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe can close games out.

However, I don't think the bullpen will have a chance to make a difference here. Roupp should outduel Drohan, and the Giants' scalding-hot offense should create enough separation to allow San Fran's dicey bullpen to shut the door.

Pick: Giants Moneyline (+134)
