John Feltman’s Giants vs Padres Preview
San Francisco Giants Betting Preview, Analysis
Tonight’s starter is Landen Roupp, who has had a resurgence in the second half of the season. He enters tonight with a 3.45 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.
Despite being roughed up in his last start, Roupp has been sensational since May. Here are his results in the past three months:
- May – 1.73 ERA (five starts)
- June – 3.20 ERA (five starts)
- July – 1.80 ERA (four starts)
Those substantial numbers suggest he is trending in the right direction. Roupp has above-average chase, whiff, and hard-hit rate against.
Roupp also has decent numbers against these San Diego hitters. Over 49 plate appearances, the Padres are batting .224 against him with only one home run.
This is a good opportunity to count on a bounce-back performance from Roupp.
The Giants' offense continues to struggle. They scored four runs in the first inning on Monday night, but only one run in the past 17 innings.
It’s a decent matchup against JP Sears, who I’ll touch on later. However, the stats against him aren’t the best, so that is worth monitoring when entering tonight’s ballgame.
Despite the poor numbers and lack of offensive output, it’s hard not to like the Giants early on in tonight’s game, given the pitching matchup.
San Diego Padres Betting Preview, Analysis
The Padres bounced back Tuesday evening, but tonight will not be a walk in the park. JP Sears gets the start, and I have many concerns about his metrics.
Sears has a terrible 5.12 ERA and 1.31 WHIP entering Wednesday’s start, and the whole body of work doesn't do him any favors either. He has a low 28% GB rate along with chase and whiff rates below 25%.
Also, he only possesses a 20% strikeout rate, well below league average. Given how bad Sears has been, it’s puzzling to see the Padres as -155 favorites.
As much as I like the San Diego offense, I have concerns about tonight’s matchup against Roupp.
Many will look to Roupp’s last start to judge his overall body of work, but he’s been a much stronger pitcher since May.
The numbers against him aren’t the best, so I could see the Padres offense struggling out of the gate.
Although I give the Padres an edge late in the game, given their offense and bullpen, I have a hard time envisioning them getting off to a fast start tonight.
Giants vs Padres Prediction, Pick
I am running back the same bet from Monday night that cashes easily with the Giants F5 +0.5 on the run line.
I love the edge they will have in the early portion of the game, and I could see the Giants’ offense get off to a quick start against Sears.
I’m not buying much stock into Sears’ success against these hitters in the past, and I think he will be in trouble tonight.
I don’t think we’ll need much offense for the Giants to cash this, as I believe Roupp will bounce back from his last outing.
The market has mispriced this, and any public bettors will look at how bad the Giants have been since June before placing their wager.
