Blue Jays vs Red Sox MLB Betting Preview

Toronto Blue Jays Betting Preview

The Blue Jays will limp into this series having lost five of seven since the All-Star break, which has put their chances of returning to the postseason on life support. At 47-56, betting on the Blue Jays to win each game this season would have yielded a -14.2% ROI, and following their narrow loss in Game 7 of the World Series, they have been among the most overvalued sides in baseball this season.

Over the last 30 days, the Blue Jays rank 30th in baseball with a wRC+ of 63 and have slugged just .321 across that span. Ernie Clement is the only bat from last year's lineup that has not offered a dropoff in production, while injuries have also taken a toll on the lineup.

The Blue Jays bullpen still projects to be a notable strength on paper, particularly the back end of Louis Varland and Tyler Rogers, but the unit has been worked quite heavily as the starting rotation has worked the fourth-fewest innings in MLB thus far this season.

Toronto would undoubtedly love to get some length out of Trey Yesavage in this start, given how heavily the team has relied on the bullpen and the fact that he still seems to be the number-two arm in the rotation.

Yesavage has pitched to an xERA of 4.04 across his last 44 innings (eight starts) and allowed an xBA of .214 in that span, as well as an actual batting average of .173; however, he has allowed 1.64 HR/9 in that span, which has led to an ugly 5.11 ERA.

Yesavage's stuff was on point last time out versus the White Sox as he racked up nine K's, and he does hold a Stuff+ rating of 108 this season. The league does seem to be figuring out his ultra-unique release point to some extent, but it still seems safe to imply that he is not as poor a starter as the ret results imply.

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

The Red Sox will look to get right back on track after having their 15-game winning streak snapped in the second matchup of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Orioles. They have struggled to a record of 23-28 at Fenway this season but will have a good opportunity to build on that surprisingly poor mark in this series.

The Red Sox have been extremely hard on left-handed pitchers over the last month but have been much less productive versus righties, hitting to a wRC+ of 93. They hold the third-lowest BB/K rate versus righties in that span, rank 21st in expected weighted on-base average, and hold the sixth-highest hard contact rate.

Blue Jays vs Red Sox Pick, Betting Analysis

Yesavage has not been in an overly strong stretch of play by any means, but he has still recorded at least 17 outs in six of his last eight starts, including a strong showing at Fenway on June 18th.

Despite their overall level of play recently, the Red Sox have not been overly efficient versus righties and offer a decent matchup for Yesavage to work fairly deep into this game.

Logically, John Schneider should be willing to give Yesavage a fairly long leash in this game unless things really go sideways, and at -115 there looks to be value in backing Yesavage to record at least 17 outs.

Pick: Trey Yesavage Over 16.5 Outs -115 (bet365, Play to -130)
