Orlando Magic vs Atlanta Hawks NBA Preview

The Magic defeated the Hawks in last season's Play-In Tournament to advance and face the Celtics.

After consecutive first-round exits, expectations were higher in Orlando with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner back healthy this season.

The team even went all-in, making its biggest trade in years by acquiring Desmond Bane in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and three first-round picks.

However, things haven't quite clicked yet, as the Magic are off to a 3-4 start.

While they've slightly improved to 22nd in offensive rating, they've slipped from second to 11th in defensive rating as they've played at a faster pace.

Even worse, Bane has struggled to integrate with the team — the Magic have a -6.8 net rating with him on the floor (210 minutes) compared to +11.9 in 125 minutes without him.

Banchero also got off to a slow start this season, but he has picked it up over the past four games, averaging 26 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 6.3 assists on 55.7% shooting from the field.

His worst performance of the year came against Atlanta, though, when he shot 4-for-15 and scored just 11 points in an 111-107 loss.

Expectations were also high in Atlanta after an impressive offseason, acquiring Kristaps Porziņģis, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Luke Kennard.

Both Porzingis and Alexander-Walker have performed well, combining for 35.1 points per game so far, even with Porzingis on limited minutes.

Still, The Hawks are 3-4 and now without Trae Young (knee) for at least the next four weeks.

Without Young, Jalen Johnson has taken on a bigger role. The 23-year-old has scored 20 or more points in five of his first six games.

He leads the team with 21 points and nine rebounds per game and ranks second behind Young with five assists per game.

Magic vs Hawks Betting Predictions, Analysis

The Magic are tied for fifth in pace while the Hawks rank 10th.

However, their first meeting (with Young) produced 218 points.

These teams are 7-3 to the under in their last 10 matchups, and only two of those games have reached 229 points.

Additionally, two of the Hawks' last three games since Young went down have gone under, which makes sense given they can craft better defensive lineups without him.

Should the game go under, that should Johnson's rebounding as well.

He had eight rebounds against the Magic while dealing with foul trouble in 26 minutes.

I like him for a double-double tonight as he has recorded 13 rebounds in each of his last two games and added eight assists against the Pacers.

Meanwhile, Wagner had 27 points on 10-for-17 shooting in the first meeting.

He's likely not well liked in Atlanta as he's averaging 24.8 points in his last five games against the Hawks.

I'll back him to score 22 tonight.

Bane, on the other hand, has scored 20 points just twice this season.

He's averaging 14.6 points per game but has posted 12, nine, and five points in his last three outings.

He hit his season average on the nose with 15 against the Hawks, and a similar effort should keep him under 17 points tonight.
