Arkansas Basketball

Arkansas is a tough bunch to figure out. It enters this contest with a 4-1 record, with the lone loss coming to Michigan State in East Lansing.

On the surface, that's a fine resume. When you dig deeper and realize that Arkansas has just one win over a team inside KenPom's top 200 — and it came in a game it should've lost to Winthrop — that changes the tune.

Arkansas feels like the type of team that will grow as the season rolls on. It's still early, and its two best players are five-star guards Meleek Thomas and Darius Acuff Jr. Both players are terrific, but they have a very full plate as youngsters.

Thomas leads Arkansas with 18.3 points per game on 43% shooting. He's lightning quick and can drill from deep. However, his shot selection is dicey and that can put Arkansas in tough spots. Acuff is a bit more efficient and handles the ball more than Thomas.

The Razorbacks have the size to be a good rebounding team, but they rank 109th in defensive rebound rate. Duke can crash the glass, so Arkansas has to end possessions with a rebound — and get on the break to let the speedy guards get free.

In the half-court, I don't see Arkansas scoring much. It'll need to be a one-on-one creation for the Razorbacks to compete with a tough, physical Duke defense.

Duke Basketball

You can make a fairly compelling case for Duke as the top team in America. Entering Thursday, Duke is a pristine 7-0 with a pair of double-digit wins over Kansas and Texas.

Duke is a very imposing and big team, ranking fifth in average height, per KenPom. The shortest starter in Duke's lineup is point guard Caleb Foster at 6-foot-5. The shortest player in Duke's deep rotation is 6-foot-4, so there's plenty of length to go around.

That length helps Duke be an elite defensive squad. The Blue Devils rank seventh in defensive efficiency, while limiting teams to 39.8% shooting from inside the arc and a 38.1% effective field goal percentage.

The size of freshman phenom Cam Boozer at 6-foot-10, 250 pounds, and Patrick Ngongba II at 6-foot-11, 250 pounds makes it tough to score inside. And if Ngongba is on the bench, Maliq Brown is one of the top big-man defenders in the sport.

The factory of highly-skilled bigs dominating for Duke continues with Boozer. It was Paolo Banchero, then Cooper Flagg, and now Boozer, who leads Duke with 21.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and four assists through seven games. His ability to find open teammates on the perimeter is a cheat code for Duke.

The Blue Devils excel at moving the ball, recording an assist on 65% of their made field goals, and 48% of their shots come from deep. What the excellent ball movement creates is clean looks inside, leading to Duke shooting 68% from 2-point range. That level of efficiency is a huge plus for the Blue Devils.

This Duke squad has very few — if any — holes.

Arkansas vs. Duke Betting Analysis

We already saw Duke handle Kansas, and the Jayhawks are in a comparable range to Arkansas.

I see this one as a blowout. The only avenue to Arkansas causing issues for Duke is by pushing the pace and its talented guards erupting.

If not, this has Duke blowout written all over it.

My Pick: Duke -10.5 (Play to -12)
