My Hofstra vs Florida State NCAAB Betting Preview

Ever since a Sweet 16 appearance in 2021, it's been downhill for Florida State and Leonard Hamilton. The Noles haven't reached the NCAA Tournament since that year and won a total of nine games in 2022-23.

Fast forward to this season and the Noles are projected to finish 15th in the ACC. And that surely looks like it's a spot-on prediction by the coaches.

Florida State is long and athletic — as usual — but it doesn't have much experienced depth. The Noles have just one returning starter — Jamir Watson (18.5 PPG) — and just two other returning players with any collegiate game experience in Tallahassee.

Even though the Noles are 2-0 ATS as a home favorite and are 3-1 overall, they were easily handled in their lone marquee game of the season. Florida jumped out to a 10-point lead within the first 10 minutes and the Noles were never close the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Hofstra is on a roll, as it upset both UMass and Seton Hall last week.

The Pride have essentially an entirely new team after losing leading scorers Tyler Thomas and Darlinstone Dubar; however, two former Iona guards — Cruz Davis and Jean Aranguren — are stealing the show by averaging 35 points per game across the first four.

The Pride are more balanced than in years past, as they have nine players averaging more than 10 minutes a game and three players in double-figures scoring.

While this write-up seems like I'm leaning toward Hofstra, I'm actually going to take Florida State ATS. The Noles' length and athleticism is likely to bother the Pride; it's just a bad matchup for them.

And let's remember, while wins against UMass and Seton Hall are quality, momentum-building victories for a program like Hofstra, they still aren't NCAA Tournament teams. No, Florida State isn't in that category either, but its roster is different in the sense that it has just five players under 6-foot-7.

The Pride are coming off two big wins, are traveling to Tallahassee to face a unique roster and they have top-10 Houston on deck. I know the early-season trends point to this being too many points, but I think the spot favors Watkins and the Noles.

Pick: Florida State -7.5 (Play to -8)
