Iona vs Kansas City College Basketball Betting Preview
Iona Basketball
Iona began the Dan Geriot regime with an impressive win against Hofstra.
The Gaels are led by transfer guard CJ Anthony, who just put up 24 points. For reference, in his three previous collegiate basketball seasons, he averaged less than one point per game. He’s also never played 30 minutes in a game, like he just did against Hofstra.
The one thing I like about Anthony is that he was in a program for three seasons and didn’t jump ship right away. But the new NIL came knocking, and with an opportunity to play, he came out big in game one.
He scored more points than he did in his entire college career combined. This Iona team will no doubt go through him, especially with its focus on guard play.
The win against Hofstra (a team ranked about 50 spots higher on KenPom) will do a lot to aid this program into momentum for the rest of the non-conference slate.
The Gaels play up-tempo and will push the pace behind their terrific guards. In a way-too-early prediction, Iona will win its conference and enter the NCAA Tournament.
Kansas City Basketball
Marvin Menzies begins his fourth year in Kansas City, and it doesn’t seem to be trending anywhere in the right direction.
He hasn't won more than 16 games in a season. After the first two games against non-Division-I opponents Evangel and Southern Illinois, we can confidently state that 16 wins is going to be a really tough ask this season.
The Roos' offense will struggle to keep pace with their shaky defense. Through two games, they've allowed opponents an average of 12.7 seconds of ball possession while on defense. And they allowed 101 points against Southern Illinois, so those aren't empty possessions.
Led by mostly upperclassmen, this team surprisingly lacks Division I experience. The Roos came into this season ranked near the bottom in terms of experience.
Along with the lack of experience, they lack any sort of depth.
Iona vs. Kansas City Betting Analysis
This Iona team is a tournament squad in my book, and it simply outmatches Kansas City in a lot of categories. The Roos will have trouble contending with the overall pace that the Gaels will put forth, and they eventually will get out-shot.
The one thing we can caution is that this is an early game, so Iona could come in a bit sleepy to start.
But over the course of the game, expect Iona to outpace and outshoot the Roos.
Our model has Iona at about 4.5 points better, so anything under that is where the value will lie. You probably couldn’t go wrong with the over, but I'm more confident in laying the chalk with the Gaels.
