Marquette vs Providence Betting Prediction
I project 164.7 points for this Big East ballgame, so I’d play the Over at 160.5 or better, representing a minimum three-point difference between my projections and the market.
Providence has been one of the nation’s best Over teams this season, posting a 20-9 mark. The Friars play fast (17 transition possessions per game, 90th percentile) and are an uber-efficient dribble creation offense (.96 PPP, 93rd percentile; .99 isolation PPP, 90th percentile).
Meanwhile, the Friars cannot stay in front of the dribble on the other end, consistently getting roasted in ball-screens (.97 PPP allowed, 16th percentile) and attack-and-kick actions (1.07 PPP allowed, 17th percentile).
So, they score a lot and don’t play defense.
Meanwhile, Marquette runs a ball-screen-centric offense that should light up Providence’s dribble defense (30 PNR possessions per game, 94th percentile), and the Eagles also struggle in ball-screen coverage (.94 PPP allowed, 27th percentile).
Predictably, these two combined for 209 points in January’s meeting. Although that game went to overtime, there were still 188 points scored in regulation. The two combined to run 80 ball-screens at 1.05 PPP.
I’m banking on more of the same in the rematch.
One quick injury note: Providence’s breakout freshman Stefan Vaaks has missed the past two games. I believe the Friars have enough depth without him to sustain their offense, but his status is worth monitoring.
My Pick: Over 160.5 or Better
