Miami (OH) vs Eastern Michigan College Basketball Betting Preview

Miami (OH) Basketball

Miami (OH) just keeps winning impressively Its latest accomplishment was a 14-point home win against Bowling Green on Friday night.

The RedHawks are still undefeated, with 27 regular-season wins, and are a perfect 14-0 in MAC play.

However, while they're unblemished in the win/loss column, it hasn't been without adversity faced. Miami (OH) had back-to-back overtime wins over Buffalo and Kent State, along with two-point victories over UMass and Buffalo again.

The offense is electric and really fun to watch. Miami (OH) is unselfish; it shares the basketball and really has an offense where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

An incredible six players average double-figure scoring for Miami (OH), led by Peter Suder and Brant Byers, who average 14.5 points per game each. Eian Elmer scores a dozen per game, while Luke Skaljac, Almar Atlason and Antwone Woolfolk each average 10.

Miami (OH) has five players that have made 30 or more 3-point shots, and this team isn't afraid to stroke it from deep.

Byers brings a unique and versatile element in that he can drive in the lane and score at the rim, often earning trips to the foul line in the process. Skaljac and Suder split point duties and each of the two have accumulated over 100 assists this season.

This offense is lethal when shots are falling.

The defense has been above average, if not premier, per MAC standards this season. The RedHawks rank third in the MAC in defensive efficiency and do well to rebound opponent misses and defend without fouling.

This isn't a team with an exquisite post presence on the defensive end, although Woolfolk brings needed athleticism in the paint.

Keeping him and Byers out of foul trouble will be critical here.

Eastern Michigan Basketball

Eastern Michigan comes into this one off an embarrassing road loss against Toledo on Saturday. It sits at 4-11 in league play, but had a couple of breaks go its way, we could be talking about a very different outlook for Stan Heath and the Eagles.

Eastern Michigan has lost games excruciatingly all season in the MAC, having dropped seven league games by six points or fewer. The Eagles' defense has been feisty at home and will have to be at its best if Eastern Michigan is to have a chance to be the first team to defeat Miami (OH) this season.

The offense operates at one of the slowest tempos in the MAC, and I think we'll see Eastern Michigan attempt to slow this game down to a halt.

Habhab Mohammad leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game, while Addison Patterson and Carlos Hart average 13. Hart has been out of the fold for five weeks due to injury and isn't expected back here. Eastern Michigan is a poor 3-point shooting team, and the Eagles don't shoot a lot of them.

The defense has shown flashes of brilliance this season, highlighted by a performance on the road against Cincinnati, holding the Bearcats to 56 points in an eight-point win.

The Eagles have held conference opponents under 60 points three times this season, and Heath has these guys playing feisty on this end of the floor, particularly at home.

Eastern Michigan defends the 3-point shot well and is decent at limiting offensive rebounds.

This is the only opponent Miami (OH) hasn't faced yet in MAC play, and I'll be interested to see what the defense has drawn up here.

Miami (OH) vs. Eastern Michigan Betting Analysis

This line opened Miami (OH) -8.5 with a total pegged at 153.5 points. While this is a contrary play given how Miami (OH) games have gone for the good majority of the season, I'm going to take the under.

Eastern Michigan has no choice but to keep this game in the low 60s for possession count and muck the game up on the defensive end.

As previously mentioned, Eastern Michigan was able to do this against a superiorly athletic Cincinnati team, but we also saw this play out at home for the Eagles against Akron.

Eastern Michigan frustrated Akron’s shooters, and the Zips had just 40 points at the under-10 timestamp in the second half. I think Eastern Michigan will be able to slow the pace and limit transition opportunities enough to stay within arms reach for 35 minutes in this game.

Miami (OH) has shown an ability to shoot its way out of trouble at times on the road, but the last two trips to Ypsilanti have been really tough on the RedHawks. I believe those trips matter, as six players who played in those prior games are still on this team.

Last season, Miami (OH) lost 76-66, but it had just 38 points scored through 30 minutes and shot just 6-of-26 from deep in that meeting. The 2024 meeting in Ypsilanti ended 52-37 and … well … that speaks for itself.

I think if this game gets out of hand it's because Eastern Michigan is unable to score enough points to stay within shouting distance late. If the Eagles' defense plays how I believe it's capable of, Miami (OH) could be held in the 70s for total points.

Hold your nose here, and dive under.

My Pick: Under 153 (Play to 151)
