Michigan vs Auburn College Basketball Betting Preview

Michigan Basketball

The Dusty May effect is real, and it didn’t take long for his Wolverines to be ranked top 10 in the preseason rankings.

However, this Michigan team hasn't entirely lived up to the billing of the No. 7 team in the nation this season.

The Wolverines beat Oakland by a large margin, but they were mostly unimpressive against Wake Forest, TCU and Middle Tennessee.

May has long been known to load his teams with a major frontcourt presence, and this version of Michigan has fit that mold. The Wolverines have a trio of bigs that have been able to win the rebounding margins and fuel second-chance opportunities.

This team will present a tough physical threat to most teams, but its major weakness will be perimeter shooting. While the Wolverines have shown the ability to win close games early on, it’s their shooting that puts them in precarious positions in the first place.

While the Wolverines' length and physicality will be a problem, Auburn is one of those teams that matches up very nicely against the Wolverines.

This Auburn team has been a question mark for us in the early going. Due to a complete roster rebuild and a coaching change near the end of the offseason, we didn’t know what to expect.

Their early strength of schedule has also been a major contributor to their 4-1 record. But a loss to Houston showed how good this team can be; they lost by just a point and had the final shot.

Their ability to isolate defenders has been a major contributor to their successes early. They've generated 1.18 per iso possession, ranking in the top 10 nationally in that category.

They also have good depth, which will be a good test for Michigan's depth.

Their biggest weakness is their perimeter defense; considering that it isn’t a strength of the Wolverines, I don’t think it’ll factor much in this game.

Michigan vs. Auburn Betting Analysis

This is a pretty tough game to handicap. On paper, both teams matchup very nicely. But in this spot, I think I like the Auburn team getting points. Auburn finished its game early, and Michigan took the court afterward.

I’m thinking we have fresher legs for this start time, and considering the biggest weakness for Auburn really doesn’t placate to Michigan's strength, it has the advantage there.

I won’t take the moneyline as I did last time for Auburn, but I do think catching 3.5/4 points will be plenty of value. May's side has gotten a bit fortunate on a couple of wins, but funky things can happen in early-season tournaments.

And luck doesn’t last forever.

My Pick: Auburn +4 (Play to +3)
