Purdue Basketball

Purdue wound up beating Memphis, 80-71, but it didn't feel that way. Memphis led midway through the second half, but the Boilers locked in late to secure the win.

The Boilermakers had to scratch and claw offensively, as Braden Smith went 2-for-14 shooting. He still tallied 11 assists, but it further reinforced how important it is for Smith to score.

It's tough to finish out possessions with a rebound against this Purdue squad. Oscar Cluff and Trey Kaufman-Renn are double-double machines that help Purdue record an offensive rebound 41% of the time.

Purdue seemed to struggle with Memphis due to its size and athleticism. Still, the Boilermakers finished with 1.18 PPP and won, despite their best player having his worst offensive night of the year.

You also can't ignore how important Fletcher Loyer is to Purdue. He was brutal in the first half, but wound up drilling four second-half 3s and scoring 20 points.

Even still, Purdue ranks first in KenPom's offensive efficiency. The Boilermakers are just so tough to contain. They never turn the ball over (13% turnover rate), grab offensive rebounds at an elite rate (42%) and shoot 39.9% from 3. That's tough to slow down for a full 40 minutes.

I have minor floor-spacing concerns with the two bigs, though. Both are terrific, so both have to play, but neither is a shooter. That can clog the lane at times — or if one is near the perimeter, it's easy for the defense to disregard them.

Texas Tech Basketball

Wake Forest gave Texas Tech all it could handle in their battle. The Red Raiders really struggled to contain the Demon Deacons in transition, leading to them scoring 1.11 PPP.

In this matchup, it'll be more of a game that Texas Tech is comfortable with since Purdue rarely looks to run in transition.

Shooting will be what dictates whether the Red Raiders take down the No. 1 team in America. Over 48% of their field goal attempts come from downtown, and they connect on 37% of them.

When things went awry for Texas Tech versus Wake Forest, it looked disjointed by the Deacons' pressure, and the Red Raiders couldn't hit a 3.

Very few teams have a one-two punch quite like JT Toppin and Christian Anderson. Toppin is probably the best big man in the sport from top to bottom. He'll have to battle the physical nature of Cluff in this one, though. Toppin has recorded 20+ in three of four games, so he'll put up points regardless.

Purdue vs. Texas Tech Betting Analysis

Neither team is as good on the defensive glass as you'd think. Tech is 195th in defensive rebounding rate, and Purdue is 213th. On the flip side, both teams are terrific on the offensive glass. It'll be interesting to see how the rebounding battle plays out.

In the half-court, I have more concerns about Purdue's defense. There have been too many moments so far where Purdue looks overmatched by more athletic teams on the defensive end.

It'll be tough for the Boilermakers to slow this dynamic Texas Tech offense in the half-court, so I'll roll with Texas Tech here.

My Pick: Texas Tech +3.5
