San Diego State vs Utah State Mountain West Championship Pick
This is the final season of the Mountain West as we know it, as most of this conference is leaving for the new-look Pac-12.
And this final season was a seesaw affair, with Utah State, San Diego State, New Mexico, Boise State, Nevada, and even Grand Canyon, vying for a realistic shot at the NCAA Tournament.
But throughout this season, Utah State has been the best team in the conference.
Both of these squads are built to put together an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 run because they both have experience. San Diego State is 72nd that category, while Utah State is 20th, with an average of 2.43 years of Division I experience.
Utah State has the edge on the interior. The Aggies do a really good job on the offensive glass, something the Aztecs struggle with.
Both the Aggies and Aztecs rank 16th and 17th, respectively, in creating turnovers, but the Aggies have the edge here because they do a lot better on offense at limiting their giveaways. Meanwhile, the Aztecs rank 214th on that end.
So, with the edge on the glass and in the turnover department, we can expect extra possessions for the Aggies.
The season series was split, and San Diego State got the bigger and better win on its home court, while Utah State won a tightly contested contest in its home gym.
But for a neutral-court game, Utah State will have the edge. While San Diego State is closer by proximity, no one travels better than Utah State in the Mountain West.
San Diego State is predicted on defense, but Utah State's offense has so many weapons to contend with.
I liked Utah State to win this tournament once the bracket was released, and I'm not changing my thought process.
Utah State, led by MJ Collins Jr. and Mason Falslev, who both average at least 16 points per game, gets the job done and punches its ticket to the Big Dance.
My Pick: Utah State ML -125
