Seton Hall Basketball

Seton Hall is enjoying a resurgent season under Shaheen Holloway. The Pirates are 10-1 with their lone loss being a two-point neutral-site loss to USC.

The Pirates feel like one of the best examples of "high-floor, low-ceiling" teams.

Defense is where Seton Hall's bread is buttered. It ranks 14th in defensive efficiency, while turning teams over 24% of the time and holding them to 42% shooting on 2s. Both figures are representative of what truly makes a defense elite. Seton Hall is in the top five in both categories.

The big-man tandem of Najai Hines and Stephon Payne deters teams from attacking the hoop. Hines, a freshman, is only growing into being a bigger piece. He blocks over two shots per game and plays fewer than 20 minutes per contest.

Now, where the issues arise is on the offensive end, where Seton Hall sits 108th in offensive efficiency.

There's no sugarcoating it: Talent-wise, Seton Hall isn't a top-50 team in America, and that shows in a half-court offensive setting. The elite defense makes up for some of the talent issues, but if Providence doesn't turn the ball over, it'll force Hall to play a half-court game.

The top four scorers for Seton Hall are all guards. AJ Staton-McCray leads the Pirates with 14.8 points per game, while Tajuan Simpkins and Adam "Budd" Clark average double-figures.

Clark is the most important of the bunch due to his speedy play and dynamic playmaking ability. Despite being 5-foot-10 and a non-shooter, Clark is a total stud.

Providence Basketball

Providence will try to speed the game up against Seton Hall. The Friars are 22nd in offensive efficiency thanks to a shift of philosophy from Kim English.

The Friars are 0-5 against high-major teams, but they lost to Virginia Tech and Butler in overtime.

They have three dynamic guards in Jason Edwards, Stefan Vaaks and Jaylin Sellers, and those three guide Providence to the No. 34th-most efficient offense in America.

Edwards is the leading scorer with 19.2 points per game, while Sellers adds 16.2 and Vaaks adds 13.2. Vaaks could be a real X-factor here. Seton Hall can make things physical on the freshman, but he's tall and can stroke it from deep.

I expect Providence to have success in this game by not turning the ball over (14.8% turnover rate) and speeding the game up.

Seton Hall has to play a certain way to win, and Providence can diversify things a bit.

Defense is the problem for the Friars. They rank 153rd in defensive efficiency, but I have hope for that to improve.

Starting center Oswin Erhunmwunse is one of the better rim-protectors in the Big East, and he alone can change games. The Friars are 46th nationally in 2-point field goal defense, but 327th in 3-point field goal defense.

The good news is Seton Hall isn't looking to shoot. If the Pirates get stuck to the perimeter, that's a winning formula for Providence.

Seton Hall vs. Providence Betting Analysis

Providence is tough to beat on the road.

This test will be one of the toughest to date for a feisty Seton Hall squad, but I'm rolling with the home team to cover the spread.

Speeding up Seton Hall is the perfect way to neutralize it offensively, and Providence has three ball-handling options to handle the Pirates' defensive pressure.

My Pick: Providence -2.5 (Play to -4.5)
