My Seton Hall vs VCU NCAAB Betting Preview
It hasn't been a pretty start to the season for Seton Hall, but that was to be expected given that Shaheen Holloway's group lost nine players from its 2023-24 roster.
But it's been how the Pirates have preformed so far that has been surprising. They dropped back-to-back games against Fordham and Hofstra, barely squeaked by Saint Peter's and haven't recorded more than 57 points in a single game yet.
So, that brings us to this duel against VCU at a neutral site as part of the Charleston Classic.
The Rams are 4-0 this season and have an elite Atlantic 10 backcourt that features Max Shulga, Phillip Russell and Joe Bamisile, who have combined for 46.5 points per game.
But VCU has yet to be tested this season. Their biggest game came against ACC bottom feeder Boston College in Maryland, a matchup in which the Rams won 80-55.
I think VCU wins this game, but I like the under.
Why? Well, while Seton Hall has been brutal offensively (362nd nationally in PPG), it also has been elite defensively (12th in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency).
Holloway preaches defense and rebounding, and even though none of Hall's competition has featured the weapons that the Rams have offensively, the Pirates still haven't allowed more than 57 points in a single game.
In fact, the Pirates only allowed Wagner to score 28 points, which is impressive and hard to do regardless of the opponent.
Meanwhile, the Rams actually have a higher adjusted defensive efficiency ranking (eighth), according to KenPom.
Seton Hall is almost last nationally in adjusted tempo and this game is being played at a neutral site. That combination means the possession count will be low, helping us stay under this very low number.
This seems like the perfect spot as long as the Rams' backcourt doesn't go wild.
