Texas A&M vs OK State College Basketball Betting Preview
For two young coaches at Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, Saturday’s tilt between the Aggies and Cowboys offers an exciting measuring stick early in the season. Texas A&M has its eyes on a run in March, while Oklahoma State would love to reach postseason action.
The Aggies traveling for a road date in Stillwater makes this a fun matchup with plenty to keep an eye on, and I bet I love in this early-season power conference clash.
Texas A&M Basketball
There aren’t many programs in college basketball that underwent as large an overhaul this summer as Texas A&M. Head coach Buzz Williams, never too comfortable in one spot for too long, once again updated his LinkedIn and headed for Maryland.
The Aggies tapped Samford head coach Bucky McMillan to take over, bringing along his BuckyBall style of high-tempo, chaotic hoops. Last season, Texas A&M ranked 215th in tempo. McMillan’s last two teams at Samford were both top 25 nationally in that metric. In the Aggies’ first two games this season, they’ve hit 75 possessions. They did that twice in the regular season last year.
To run this high-paced attack, McMillan needed talent, and a lot of it. To stay fresh at that speed, Bucky’s teams need to be deep. His best team, which nearly toppled Kansas in 2024’s NCAA Tournament, ranked 5th in minutes played by bench players.
McMillan raided the transfer portal and hit the recruiting trail. In two games this season, 13 Aggies have scored. Just one was in College Station last year – Chris McDermott, who has all of 1 point in 4 minutes played.
The biggest names are Pop Isaacs, once a star at Texas Tech and Creighton, now working his way back from a season-ending injury suffered last year, and Rylan Griffen, a sharpshooter by way of Alabama and Kansas.
So far, so good for BuckyBall, with two 30-point wins over bad competition and an average of over 100 points per game. This is the Aggies' first real test.
OK State Basketball
The first year of the Steve Lutz era in Stillwater felt like an experiment happening behind closed doors.
“No peeking, we’re building something here!”
The result was a .500 season, with some proof of concept for Lutz as a power-conference coach. He made the Big Dance all three years he was a head man at lower levels, but the Big 12 is quite the jump from the Southland and Conference USA.
That building now comes with a mostly renewed roster. In an opening win over Oral Roberts, seven of nine Cowboys who scored were new faces. Former LSU guard Vyctorius Miller led the way, with UAM transfer Christian Coleman adding 15 points and 11 boards, and Oregon State transfer big man Parsa Fallah adding 15 more.
UMass transfer Jaylen Curry will be the straw that stirs things offensively, posting 13 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the opener. He’ll be joined in the backcourt by Isaiah Coleman, who led Seton Hall in scoring last season, and Anthony Roy, who would have led the nation in scoring at Green Bay last season if he played enough games to qualify. Both missed the opener, with Coleman confirmed to play Saturday and Roy considered day-to-day with a chance to play.
Texas A&M vs. OK State Betting Analysis
Texas A&M is the better team here, but it’s tough to commit to betting on a team with so many newcomers in a tough, true road environment in early November. Add in the uncertainty of Roy’s injury status, and I’m avoiding the spread or a moneyline.
Instead, my eyes shot towards the total.
Both of these teams and coaches want to push the pace. Lutz’s last two teams were top 12 in the country in tempo. McMillan has been top 25 in that stat in three of his five years in Division I. It’s a small sample size, but the Aggies are averaging 76 possessions, and the Pokes’ opener was a lightning-quick 85 possessions.
This total is high. I’m expecting the final score even higher. Someone here is getting to triple-digits or at least within spitting distance of it. I’m jumping at the over.
My Pick: Over 169.5 (-110)
