Queens vs Winthrop College Basketball Betting Preview

Queens Basketball

Queens University enters its fourth season in the Division I ranks, and much to its credit, it's gotten better, claiming its first postseason appearance in 2024-25 with a trip to the CBI.

This Queens team comes in with an oddity in today's college basketball landscape. The Royals return three players, two of whom were their scoring core a season ago.

Chris Ashby and Yoav Berman averaged 12.7 and 8.2 points per game, respectively. They also welcomed a big man transfer in Carson Schwieger, who's a double-digit scorer and can do a lot of good for their frontcourt.

Gus Larson, a grad transfer with size and experience, will also be able to shoulder much of the load.

They have Nasir Mann back, a senior with long-range ability.

Winthrop Basketball

Winthrop had a disappointing end to the season in 2024-25, falling in the Big South Tournament to High Point by 12 points.

The Eagles also come into this season as a completely rebuilt program. They lost their three best producers, Paul Jones III (transferred to James Madison), Kelton Talford and Ryan Jolly.

They return four players to provide a bit of depth, but their total minutes entering this season raise a few question marks.

While last season's team relied heavily on post play behind Talford, this season's focus will have to be on the guards.

They brought in Daylen Berry, a leading scorer for Charleston Southern a season ago. He comes in as a senior and will look to contribute in a big way. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game last season.

Winthrop will also benefit from Duquesne transfer Kareem Rozier. Considered a floor general, Rozier attributes a low turnover ratio to aid Winthrop.

Winthrop was the fourth-fastest team last season in adjusted tempo, but it struggled to avoid turnovers. Expect a similar pace, with fewer turnovers this season.

Queens vs. Winthrop Betting Analysis

It's the first game of the season. So yes — I have to play here!

My best pick in this game will be Queens at +5. The Royals come in with a bit more experience at the high Division I level. Winthrop did add transfers, but Queens is in a better position to start the season.

The Royals kept a bulk of their production a season ago, and for today's standards, added the pieces they needed to make it go.

I like their ability to take good shots from the floor, as we've seen the last few years under Grant Leonard, and I expect this to continue this season.

I also looked at the under for this game, but the overall pace might be a concern, as the first game out of the gate tends to be a bit chaotic.

If it comes down to free throws, I like Queens to be in a better position. The Royals might win outright, but I'll take my points in the back pocket for some insurance.

My Pick: Queens +5
