49ers vs Raiders NFL Preseason Preview, Picks

The 49ers and Raiders meet on Saturday with both teams looking for their first win of the preseason. The teams are fresh from a joint practice in which both teams shined at times. There's also positive news around seeing starters, which should make this a more competitive game.

We saw just one 49ers starter (Ben Bartch) in their first preseason game, a 30-9 defeat to the Broncos. They've historically played barely any first-stringers in the first game, before introducing them into the following two games.

It's no different this year, with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirming that he intends, although not fully confirmed, to start Brock Purdy and a chunk of the starting offense and defense, saying he's "planning on some starters to play."

Given the number of injuries on the roster, Shanahan will be concerned about things worsening, but it's essential for his players to see some action. The quarterbacks struggled against the Broncos, with Mac Jones, Carter Bradley and Tanner Mordecai all getting intercepted and all failing to throw a touchdown pass.

It was only Jones who managed to complete over 50% of his passing attempts and there's no doubt that the addition of Purdy, as well as key figures on both lines, will improve the team. Ricky Pearsall has been the darling of camp and could continue his high performances into this game.

For Pete Carroll, things are slightly less clear, but he's said that "everybody's live," which can give us an indication that we should see Geno Smith and co,, at least for a little bit. Smith certainly wants to play and has said that he intends for the team "to set the tone."

Geno was on the field very briefly in the first preseason game but threw just three passes before being replaced, leaving Aidan O'Connell to step in, as well as a short cameo from Cam Miller. O'Connell threw for over 200 yards and a touchdown but also got picked off twice, but he remains an experienced preseason contributor.

This is their only home game of the preseason and it's an opportunity to see more of their new quarterback and recently drafted running back Ashton Jeanty, who will be the big draw for fans visiting Allegiant Stadium. He's looking to bounce back after finishing with -1 yards from his three carries in the tie with the Seahawks.

As mentioned above, Week 2 of the preseason has been an important one for the Niners under Shanahan. Despite being 12-12 through preseason as an HC, he's an impressive 5-2 in Week 2.

Take the 49ers to cover.

My Pick: 49ers +4.5 (-110, Fanatics)
