Golden Knights vs. Ducks Preview

Vegas Golden Knights

The biggest storyline surrounding the Golden Knights’ playoff run has been the play of goaltender Carter Hart. After a turbulent start to his tenure in Vegas, Hart caught fire late in the regular season and has maintained that form.

Over his past 13 starts, Hart is 10-3 with a .920 save percentage and a 2.06 goals-against average. His performance has been supported by one of the league’s top defensive teams.

By limiting high-danger scoring chances, the Golden Knights finished the regular season ranked second in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). With that combination of defense and goaltending, it is not surprising that there have been six or fewer total goals scored in each of Vegas’ past three games.

Anaheim Ducks

Across the ice, goaltender Lukas Dostal is expected to start for the Ducks. Like Hart, Dostal enters this contest in good form.

Over his past three starts, Dostal is 2-1 with a .929 save percentage and a 1.68 goals-against average. He has also benefited from improved defensive play in front of him during the postseason.

Among the 16 playoff teams, Anaheim ranks sixth in xGA/60 at 5-on-5. Given the defensive structure and goaltending on both sides, another low-scoring game is likely in this series.

Golden Knights vs. Ducks Prediction

Despite only eight total goals scored through the first two games of this second-round matchup, the total remains as high as 6.5. Both offenses are strong, which helps explain the elevated number despite recent results.

However, with the series tied and both goaltenders in form, it would not be surprising if the trend of low-scoring games continues. In fact, there have been six or fewer total goals scored in 11 of the past 16 meetings between these teams.

Pick: Under 6.5 (-125 | Play to -130, FanDuel)
