Washington

Sports betting is legal in Washington state, but only in a limited way. You can place sports bets at authorized tribal casino sportsbooks, not through statewide online sportsbook apps. Some tribal casinos may offer mobile betting on site, but those apps must be geofenced to the casino premises. That means you cannot open DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM or Caesars from home in Washington and place a standard online sports bet.
While Washington’s sports betting options are limited, there will still be a lot of interest in major events this year, especially soccer. Seattle will be a major World Cup host city this summer, with Seattle Stadium scheduled to host six matches between June 15 and July 6, including four group-stage matches, one Round of 32 match and one Round of 16 match.
Below, we’ll cover what’s legal in Washington, where in-person sportsbooks are available, what to know about DFS and social casinos, and how World Cup betting works in the state.
Can I Bet on the World Cup in Washington?
Yes, but only through Washington’s limited retail sports betting model. If a tribal casino sportsbook offers World Cup markets, eligible bettors can place those wagers in person at the casino. Some casinos may also support mobile wagering on site, but Washington rules require mobile sports bets to stay geofenced to the casino premises. That means you cannot place standard World Cup bets from home through a statewide online sports betting app.
Available soccer markets may include match winner, totals, futures, live betting and player props, depending on the sportsbook. Market availability can vary by casino, so check the sportsbook before traveling.
Online Sportsbooks, DFS and Social Casinos in Washington
Washington does not allow statewide online sportsbook apps. Legal sports betting is limited to authorized tribal casino sportsbooks, and any mobile wagering offered by a tribal casino must stay geofenced to that casino’s premises.
DFS is also not available in Washington. State gambling rules treat paid fantasy contests as unauthorized gambling, so major DFS operators don't accept Washington users. Social casinos and sweepstakes-style casino products are also a problem in Washington. The state says gambling is illegal unless it's specifically authorized by law, and sweepstakes-style gambling isn't authorized.
Prediction markets are not a clean workaround in Washington either. The Washington State Gambling Commission has said event-based contracts are not authorized in the state, even while related litigation continues elsewhere.
For users in Washington, the safest legal sports betting option is still simple: visit an authorized tribal casino sportsbook.

Washington Teams to Follow
Washington has a strong local sports market, led by the Seahawks, Mariners, Kraken, Sounders, Reign and Storm. College sports also have a spot here, especially Washington, Washington State and Gonzaga basketball.
Sports betting rules are narrower than the team list, though. Washington sportsbooks cannot take wagers on college events involving Washington schools or college events taking place in the state. So, before placing a college bet at a tribal casino sportsbook, check the posted market rules.
