2025 Tennessee Volunteers Football

The Tennessee Volunteers football team is gearing up for the 2025 season with high expectations following a successful 10-3 campaign in 2024. Under the guidance of head coach Josh Heupel, the team aims to build on its achievements and continue making strides in the competitive landscape of college football. Heupel has accumulated 37 wins over his first five seasons.

The big offseason storyline for Tennessee was the departure of QB Nico Iamaleava. An NIL dispute led the quarterback to transfer to UCLA, and Tennessee responded by bringing in former App State QB Joey Aguilar. The Vols have yet to name a starting quarterback for the 2025 season, but Aguilar appears to have the upper hand. He passed for 56 touchdowns over two seasons with App State.

On the other side of the ball, the Vols’ defense was a major strength in 2024. Tennessee allowed the second-fewest yards per game and the third-fewest points per game in the SEC. That unit may not be as dominant this year, however, as its star pass rusher, James Pearce Jr, declared for the NFL Draft and became a first-round pick. Do they have enough talent to make another CFP appearance?

Despite the roster turnover, Tennessee has appealing National Title consensus odds at +6000, placing them mid-pack among SEC teams. Additionally, the Vols carry +300 odds to make the 12-team playoff under Heupel. Bookmakers are less optimistic about Tennessee’s chances of winning the loaded SEC, assigning the Vols +2500 odds to claim the conference title.

Tennessee Volunteers Point Spreads

"Covering the spread" refers to a spread bet, which is a wager on how much a team will win or lose by.

Here’s how a Volunteers spread might look:

  • Tennessee +9.5 (-110)
  • Alabama -9.5 ( -110)

If the Volunteers lose 34–20, they fail to cover the spread (or are losers ATS, Against the Spread), since they need to either win the game or lose by 9 points or fewer to cash spread tickets. Alabama, on the other hand, covers the spread with a win of 10 or more points.

Tennessee Volunteers Over/Unders

Betting on the Vols' overs was profitable in 2024. They finished 8-5 on over/unders — bets on the total amount of points scored in a game — so if you bet on the over every game, you came out with a profit.

Oddsmakers set the total based on how many points they think will be scored in the game—for example, 47 points for a game against Alabama. If you bet the over, a 34–20 final means your bet pays off, regardless of who wins. If you bet the under, you’d need the total score to be 47 points or fewer. Ties (when the total lands exactly on the number) are possible and result in a refund.

Tennessee Volunteers Moneylines

Moneyline odds take into account how likely a team is to win the game and adjust payouts accordingly. However, a winning record doesn’t always mean a profit.

For example, Tennessee defeating Missouri as a -300 favorite is fine, but a $30 bet only pays out $10. On the other hand, if you catch the Volunteers as a +300 underdog, a $10 bet would profit $30. These bets are easiest to understand using $10 or $100 as a unit, but the math works the same regardless.

Tennessee Volunteers Props

Player props are bets on the statistics a player puts up in a single game. You can bet on a player's rushing or passing stats.

Tennessee Volunteers Futures

While they’re flying a little under the radar thanks to sharing the SEC with Alabama, Georgia, and now former Big 12 powerhouses like Texas and Oklahoma, they still have a shot at making noise in the conference. If you think they’re going to win the SEC, you can put your money down on a futures bet.

Futures are wagers that settle at the end of the season. In addition to betting on conference winners, popular futures include odds for players to win end-of-season awards and over/unders on team win totals throughout the year.
