The Tennessee Volunteers football team is gearing up for the 2024 season with high expectations following a successful 9-4 campaign in 2023. Under the guidance of head coach Josh Heupel, the team aims to build on their achievements and continue to make strides in the competitive landscape of college football. Heupel has accumulated 27 wins over his first three seasons - this is the most wins in a three-year span in Knoxville since Phillip Fulmer won 28 games between 2002 and 2004.

Although it may seem like a rebuilding year on the surface, Tennessee may have the firepower to potentially contend for a College Football Playoff spot in the expanded format. On the offensive side, the Volunteers will transition from Joe Milton, a day three draft selection, to Nico Iamaleava under center. Iamaleava was one of the top recruits in the Class of 2023 - he served as Milton's backup until the Citrus Bowl, where he recorded four total touchdowns en route to 35-0 win over Iowa. Iamaleava will complemented by a plethora of weapons, including Squirrel White, Bru McCoy, and transfer portal acquisition, Chris Brazzell II from Tulane.

On the other side of the ball, the Vols defense was a surprising strength in 2023. In 2022, Tennessee had a historic season on offense, lighting it up with Hendon Hooker and Jalin Hyatt with an all-out aerial attack. Although the 2023 offense wasn't a weakness, it was the defense that kept Tennessee in a lot of games. A big reason for that was edge rusher James Pearce Jr. The 6'5" pass rusher had a remarkable 9.5 sacks last season and is an early contender to be the top overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Pearce Jr. will be leaned on heavily as the Volunteers have 5 new starters slated to start in the secondary.

Despite the roster turnover, Tennessee has appealing National Title consensus odds at +3500, which is tied for 12th shortest odds in the country. Additionally, the Vols are carrying +170 odds to make the expanded 12-team playoff under head coach Josh Heupel. Despite this, the bookmakers don't have as much optimism for the Vols to win the loaded SEC as they carry +1400 odds to win the conference.
