Cubs vs Brewers MLB Betting Preview

I know the Cubs have one of the more dangerous offenses in baseball, but I still project this total closer to 6.8 runs, so I’m happy to play Under 7.5 at anything down to -125.

One of the biggest reasons is Milwaukee’s pitching depth. Even if the Cubs succeed in driving Jacob Misiorowski’s pitch count up early — which they’re typically very good at doing thanks to their patient offensive approach — the Brewers have a fully rested bullpen ready to take over.

Chicago didn’t grind down Freddy Peralta yesterday, but over the course of the season, this lineup has consistently forced starters into deep counts and gotten into opposing bullpens. That strategy is less impactful today because Milwaukee’s relief corps is fresh.

The game also sets up well from a run-prevention standpoint. I rate these as two of the top defensive teams in baseball, and while both clubs generate value with their baserunning, the overall defensive quality helps suppress scoring. My biggest concern is actually Chicago’s bullpen.

After the recent doubleheader, it’s not the most rested group, and I project it as the second-worst bullpen on today’s slate. Even after accounting for that — and for Colin Rea’s underwhelming season — I still can’t get this total above 6.8.

The market has already moved in the right direction, dropping from 7.5 toward 7, but there’s still value at the opener. Conditions could help the under as well, with temperatures in the 60s and winds expected to blow in at American Family Field if the roof remains open. All signs point toward a lower-scoring game, and I think seven is a very live landing spot.

Pick: Under 7.5
