Rangers vs Yankees MLB Betting Preview
Editor's Note: This written article is a transcription from the latest episode of the Payoff Pitch podcast.
This is a weather-oriented "Over" play for me. We are looking at 17 mph winds blowing out to left field at Yankee Stadium, which should give the ball some extra carry tonight.
For today’s matchup, Jacob deGrom takes the mound for the Rangers, while the Yankees are sending Elmer Rodriguez out for his second consecutive start to begin his MLB career.
In Rodriguez’s debut, we saw him struggle once he reached the second and third time through the order. The Rangers' lineup became a real problem for him; his pitch count climbed, he started walking batters, and he eventually had to be pulled, leaving the bullpen to bail him out.
It is a unique situation because he is facing the exact same team in back-to-back starts to start his career.
The Rangers got a great look at him last week in Texas, and I expect them to pounce on him tonight. His underlying numbers weren't great either—a 92 Stuff+ and a 5.50 BotERA in that first outing.
While he will likely improve eventually, facing the same disciplined lineup after walking so many guys last time is a major red flag.
On the other side, the Yankees' offense has been crushing everyone they play. I have this total projected at 9.4 runs. I’ve already bet the Over 9 (-105), but I am also targeting the Rangers in the first half of the game.
I make the Rangers F5 line -120 with deGrom on the hill, and I have bet that up to -110. I expect things to get tighter once the bullpens take over—I do not trust the Texas relief core whatsoever—but I fully expect the Rangers to hold a lead after the first five innings.
Picks: Over 8.5 (-120, play up to -9) / Rangers F5 ML (-118)
