Florida Basketball
Florida's basketball program started the season with headlines about head coach Todd Golden's investigation for improper activities on campus. That scandal has faded into the background as the investigation continues, while the Gators march through their schedule successfully.
The Gators are riding the nation's longest winning streak, sitting at 9-0, yet Florida has yet to face a top-50 KenPom team or play in a game decided by single-digits.
The upcoming slate against the monstrously good SEC — which is shaping up to be one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball memory — is approaching fast to test this team's mettle.
Florida's fate in the SEC will be decided by its backcourt. Former mid-major stars Walter Clayton Jr., in his second year at Gainesville after transferring from Iona, and Alijah Martin, from FAU's Final Four team, pace the Gators' offense and lead the defensive attack on the perimeter.
That aggressive nature on the perimeter has kept opponents off the 3-point line and forces them to tangle with rim protector Rueben Chinyelu in the paint.
Forcing tough shots, cleaning the defensive glass, then charging into transition scoring chances with Martin and Clayton handling the ball makes for a potent recipe for Golden's Gators.
Arizona State Basketball
Bobby Hurley's seat got awfully warm last spring and the hot Tempe sun would only increase that pressure without some results on the court this season.
In nine seasons running the Sun Devils, Hurley has made just three NCAA Tournaments and has yet to play a second-round game. Last season, Hurley's team was under .500 and one of the worst teams in the now defunct Pac-12. Moving to the basketball-focused Big 12 placed a big target on Arizona State.
So far this season, Hurley has quieted the noise a bit. The Sun Devils are 8-1, the lone loss a true roadie at Gonzaga.
A strong start is not atypical for Hurley in Temple, though. Last season, Arizona State started 6-2 and 4-0 in conference play before sliding. The year prior, the Sun Devils were 15-3 before losing five of six and falling apart. In 2019, they were 7-0 before losing four of six. In 2018, Arizona State was 12-0 before finishing 8-10 in conference play.
Some of that is due to the schedule. Arizona State's schedule ranks well with games against solid mid-majors, but the Sun Devils haven't faced a power-conference opponent yet.
Within that schedule, freshman Joson Sanon has been the standout, leading the team in scoring while hitting 54% from beyond the arc. He entered as a top-25 recruit, but his immediate impact has buoyed the program, opening players like Adam Miller and Ball State transfer Basheer Jihad to be more complementary pieces on the offensive end.
Florida vs. Arizona State Betting Analysis
This game sits at a fun time in the schedule for these two teams. Both have played well and won games, but neither has been tested. Arizona State's lone loss is a true road game at Gonzaga, but the Sun Devils' only top-50 win is against Saint Mary's, and they have yet to face a team from a power conference.
Florida is one of the final unbeaten teams in college hoops, though the Gators also don't have a top-50 win. Unlike the Sun Devils, the Gators have impressed beyond simply notching victories. Florida's last three games have been blowout victories over Wake Forest, Wichita State and Virginia.
Arizona State has had some close calls, including a four-point win over Cal Poly, and has succeeded largely thanks to a top-20 percentage from beyond the arc. That number is blaring for regression, especially when you dig into some of the individual shooting performances this season on the roster.
The analytically-minded Florida coaching staff has the Gators running opponents off the 3-point line and should be able to box in this Arizona State offense.
