New Haven vs Fordham College Basketball Betting Preview

New Haven Basketball

New Haven has had a rough first season at the Division I level, as the Chargers have just two wins over Division I opponents in UMass Lowell and Delaware State.

We've seen this team get blown out several times, as the offense isn't consistent enough to score and the defense doesn’t contest down in the paint.

Jabri Fitzpatrick is the Chargers' leading scorer (13 PPG), but he struggles to consistently make shots and there's not a ton of help around him.

New Haven is one of the very worst teams in the country at shooting the 3, and the Chargers aren't equipped with a facilitator who can distribute the ball and create opportunities for others.

Defensively, New Haven has struggled at preventing second-chance opportunities, and there's not a large post presence to alter shots and corral rebounds.

This team is still a year away from constructing a real competitive roster at this level.

Fordham Basketball

Fordham has actually been a fairly feisty bunch this season, having registered eight wins with close losses against Iona and Holy Cross peppered in.

The Rams operate at a slow pace offensively and lean in on their skilled defense to control terms.

We've seen this Fordham team routinely play games with possession counts in the low 60s and they even played Wagner in a game that had 59 total possessions.

The Fordham defense should have success in this matchup, and as long as Dejour Reaves and Christian Henry can knock down jumpers, Fordham should have no trouble on Monday.

New Haven vs. Fordham Betting Analysis

I'm willing to lay up to 12 with Fordham in this matchup. I love how the Rams' defense has played, as they have held Fairleigh Dickinson and Manhattan under 55 points in back-to-back games.

The Rams don't allow second-chance points and rank eighth nationally in defensive free-throw rate. Being able to defend without fouling will serve the Rams well, as New Haven doesn't get to the charity stripe frequently and the Chargers struggle to shoot from anywhere on the floor.

Expect a slow-paced game in which neither team looks to run in transition. I would anticipate Fordham forces New Haven deep into the possession clock, which will result in low percentage mid-range jumpers or turnovers.

Reaves is going to feast in this matchup and I don't believe New Haven can defend him off the dribble. Watch for him and Henry to create and get easy looks at the rim, or end up at the foul line.

On misses, Rikus Schulte and Akira Jacobs should have opportunities for offensive boards and putbacks.

This game appears to be a mismatch, and it's one in which the Fordham defense should have success in. You won't have second-chance opportunities against these guys, as the Rams are top-30 nationally in rebounding and defend the paint very well for an A-10 squad.

Expect New Haven to score in the mid-50s, and when all is said and done, Fordham should ease into Christmas break with a 15-point win.

My Pick: Fordham -11.5 (Play to -12)
