Villanova vs Creighton College Basketball Betting Preview
Villanova Basketball
Villanova comes into this matchup as part of an obvious top three in the Big East, trailing just St. John's and UConn, who are tied at the top of the standings with one loss apiece.
The Wildcats are the only other team above .500 in conference play outside of the Red Storm and the Huskies. Villanova has a clear style of play and identity that first-year head coach Kevin Willard has brought to the program. Willard has led a squad that's great on both ends of the court, but especially efficient on the offensive end.
The Wildcats play at an incredibly slow pace, as their 64.0 adjusted tempo rating ranks 337th in the nation. But don't confuse the slow pace with a lack of offense. Villanova ranks a solid 51st in 3-point percentage, 89th in 2-point percentage and 57th in effective field goal percentage.
The Wildcats also shoot triples at the 40th-highest rate in the country, leaning further into that shooting efficiency.
In this matchup, Villanova will be comfortable as Creighton doesn't play too fast, and the Wildcats have also been great on the road this season.
Villanova is 6-2 on the road this season, losing only to Michigan and UConn (who have three combined losses), and sees a jump in efficiency metrics from 32nd overall to 22nd on the road, via Bart Torvik.
Creighton Basketball
Creighton plays a relatively similar style to Villanova, emphasizing shooting from the 3-point line. The Bluejays take nearly 50% of their shots (49.4% to be exact) from beyond the arc, ranking 20th in the nation in 3-point attempt rate.
Interestingly, Creighton's system on defense is also built to run teams off the 3-point line, as the Bluejays only allow 3-point attempts on 32.1% of possessions (13th-lowest rate allowed in the nation).
That strategy didn't show up as much in the first matchup between these two teams, though, as Villanova attempted 24 treys compared to Creighton's 23 attempts.
The Wildcats shot just 25% on those attempts, however, which was shocking considering the Wildcats are typically a good shooting team, and Crieghton has struggled to defend the 3 – opponents shoot 35.8% against them, which gives them the 284th-best ranking in the country when it comes to defending the 3.
If the Bluejays are going to have a chance to complete the season sweep against Villanova, they'll have to defend from deep as well as they did in the first matchup.
If Creighton can do that, it'll have a solid chance to win at home.
Villanova vs. Creighton Betting Analysis
The last time these two teams played, a lack of defense on 2-pointers and a rough shooting night overall came back to bite Villanova.
As mentioned before, the Wildcats also shot a dismal 25% from deep, uncharacteristic for one of the most efficient shooting offenses in the country.
This time around, Villanova will recognize the importance of the opportunity to pick up a quality road victory and continue its streak of impressive road performances en route to a victory.
However, the moneyline here isn't a good enough pick from a value perspective, so despite Creighton defeating the Wildcats in the first matchup of the season, the spread is still tight enough for me to back Villanova to cover.
My Pick: Villanova -3.5 (Play to -5.5)
