Eagles vs Rams Sunday Night Football Preview, Prediction
Offensively, both of these teams have been second-half teams this season.
The Eagles are 19th in first-half points per game (9.8), but first in second-half PPG (16.1). The Rams are 27th in first-half PPG (8.3), but 12th in second-half PPG (12.4). Over the last four weeks, with Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua back in the fold, those averages for the Rams tick up slightly to 9.0 in the first half and 13.8 in the second half.
The Eagles lead the NFL with 16.3 first-half rushing attempts per game, which typically results in longer drives.
Without DeVonta Smith (hamstring), and facing a Rams defense that ranks ninth in pressure rate (26.2%), the Eagles are not likely to deviate much for the norm.
Dallas Goedert and Saquon Barkley should be able to pick up some of the receiving slack for Smith underneath, but Smith's absence makes it easier for the Rams to focus on staying over the top of A.J. Brown and limiting his explosive plays.
The Rams play zone coverage at a top-five rate, which is typically where Smith tends to factor in most. This season, Smith's target rate per route is 11.4% lower than Brown's versus man coverage but just 3.2% lower against zone, per PFF.
The Rams have faced a number of good defenses, but the Eagles may be their toughest matchup because of how well they are defending wide receivers, which is obviously the Rams' biggest strength with Kupp and Nacua.
Among 112 qualified corners, rookies Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell grade out sixth and 23rd, respectively, at PFF. Darius Slay is not far behind at 32nd.
Since their Week 6 bye, the Eagles held Terry McLauren to 10 yards on 2 targets, CeeDee Lamb to 21 yards on 6 targets, Brian Thomas Jr. to 22 yards on 4 targets, Ja'Marr Chase to 54 yards and a TD on 11 targets, Malik Nabers to 41 yards on 8 targets, and Amari Cooper to 42 yards on 6 targets.
Matthew Stafford represents a step up in class from the quarterbacks the Eagles faced during that run, but this is still a spot where the Rams passing game projects to clock in below its season averages.
That's especially true in the first half, where the Eagles defense is first in net yards per pass (4.5), fourth in pass success rate (38.7%), and fifth in Expected Points Added per Dropback (-0.088), according to rbsdm.com.
Per our Action Labs data, Eagles first-half unders are 8-2 (80%) this season, covering by an average of 4.2 points per game, and Rams first-half unders are 7-3 (70%), covering by an average of 2.8 points per game.
My Pick: First Half Under 23.5 (+102, DraftKings)
