While this will officially be his rookie season in the majors, he has shown good control in his minor league starts, having a 3.57 ERA and an outstanding 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Holding opponents to a .194 batting average presumes he should be able to hold the scuffling Angels offense down reasonably well. With the Angels coming in at just 27th in MLB in runs scored per game with an average of 3.9, Hurter provides control and is capable of allowing weak contact, which will likely hold down their meager run production even further. On the other side, Johnny Cueto has not been great lately but is experienced enough to get through a Detroit lineup that ranks a slight 24th in batting average and 19th in runs scored. The Tigers have had their struggles all year offensively-against right-handed pitchers, in particular, to which they have 22nd-ranked OPS against. Cueto should be successful in this lineup, with the ability to go deep into a game of course - like he did against Kansas City with 6 1/3 innings of work. Both teams are well-below-average offenses, with the Tigers and Angels ranking 24th and 25th, respectively, in batting average. Further reinforcement comes from how bad the OPS is from the Tigers against right-handed pitching and some struggles for the Angels against left-handers. Neither team gets particularly strong offense going, and both of the starting pitchers can limit damage.
