This potent passing attack-anchored by dynamic Chase Roberts, who brought in 7 receptions for 108 yards-will test the SMU secondary. It is the weakest of the three units for the Mustangs-something Retzlaff and Roberts can take advantage of. While the Mustangs are solid up front with their front seven, particularly against the run, past struggles with mobile signal-callers-like Nevada's Brendon Lewis-might pry the door open for BYU to mix in packages highlighting Bohanon's mobility and adding another layer to their offense. Another level of balance comes from BYU's attack, which includes running backs LJ Martin and Hinckley Ropati, in that it keeps them away from merely passing and gives them the wiggle room to also attack SMU's defense on multiple levels. Meanwhile, the offense of SMU has also not been lesser of a force. Averaging 44.0 points per game with an explosive ability both through the air and on the ground, they chipped in 501.5 yards per game. With dual-threat QB Kevin Jennings piling up 202 total yards and a ground game churning in 369 yards and four touchdowns in their dominant win over Houston Christian, this is a team that simply moves the ball at will. But the more traditional pocket passer in Preston Stone brings even more diversity into the attack that keeps defenses on their heels. The Cougars will struggle containing an SMU offense that has shown the capability of big plays in many ways-be it through Jennings's legs or Stone's arm. On defense, SMU's stout, too, allowing just 15.5 points per game (34th) while ranking top 30 in rushing and passing defense. Of course, with BYU's dynamic skills on offense and the Mustangs allowing big plays all year to mobile quarterbacks, the Cougars should enjoy success moving the football. The statistically sound SMU defense hasn't seen anything like this BYU offense all year.
