Both teams enter this game with significant uncertainties, particularly on the offensive side. For the Patriots, they are undergoing a complete overhaul with Bill Belichick’s departure, leaving the defense in the hands of Jerod Mayo, who inherits a unit with potential but big shoes to fill. Drake Maye may be the future at quarterback, but Jacoby Brissett will lead the Patriots in this matchup. Brissett has been serviceable in the past, but the glaring issues on the offensive line and a lack of proven playmakers on the receiving corps raise questions about New England’s ability to move the ball effectively. After a rough preseason showing by the offensive line, there is little confidence that they can protect Brissett well enough to sustain drives, especially against a Bengals defense that will look to assert its dominance.
On the ground, while Rhamondre Stevenson showed flashes last season, Ezekiel Elliott's departure leaves a void in the backfield that further limits New England’s offensive ceiling. Defensively, the Patriots remain strong, particularly with Christian Gonzalez emerging as a top cornerback. Though Matt Judon’s absence leaves questions in the pass rush, their secondary and overall depth remain strong enough to limit explosive plays from a Bengals offense that is also facing its own issues.
Cincinnati’s offensive outlook depends on Joe Burrow’s return to form. While he was effective in limited action last season, injuries to his supporting cast, including the uncertain statuses of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, cloud their ability to score big. The Bengals have the weapons to put points on the board, but without Higgins and possibly Chase, the offensive output will be limited. Zack Moss takes over for Joe Mixon, and while he’s capable, he’s not the dynamic threat Mixon was. With Burrow’s health being prioritized, expect Cincinnati to lean on the run game, which will eat the clock and limit scoring opportunities.
Defensively, Cincinnati is led by Logan Wilson and Trey Hendrickson, who combined for a fearsome pass rush. However, their secondary is unproven and susceptible to being exposed, but this Patriots offense doesn’t appear capable of taking advantage. Brissett will struggle to find time in the pocket, and if the Bengals establish a lead, they will look to run out the clock, allowing their defense to keep New England in check.
With both teams having serious question marks on offense, and two defenses that are better than their counterparts, the game script favors a low-scoring affair. Expect both squads to focus on controlling the game, keeping the score low, and avoiding mistakes. The Patriots’ offensive struggles should keep them from surpassing 10 points, while the Bengals, without their full complement of playmakers, won’t need to score more than 24 to win this game.

- [ ] Under in 10/14 last season
- [ ] ADOT was 9.4 yards, only 13 of his 61 targets traveled 15+ yards
- [ ] Coming off an injury where he missed most of camp - and a new QB + offense. Capable backup with Hooper
- [ ] Uncertain what his role will be in this offense, but more firepower at receiver this season (Douglas year 2, Polk, KJ Osborn)
